whomper
How do you do a complete restart clear out on your computer ? I did it once before but cant remember how I did it. My main pc is the one my whole family uses. Between the tons of kids sites, huddle , facebook etc. I am loaded with stuff slowing my computer. My normal guy that cleans up my comp for me is unavailable for a while. I dont have anything on here I am worried about losing so I am just gonna do a restart. Please advise how I do that . Thanks

delusions of grandeur
save off your data (drive or discs), find your windows discs, reformat your hard drive, reinstall yer apps, restore yer data. you may want to save off your bookmarks as well ... You shouldn't have to reformat the drive, just pop in the windows disk and choose "fresh installation", or whatever the other option besides repair is there. In that process, it will ask you which hard drive to partition/reformat (in most cases C://). Before you do: If you have any important files, go ahead and back them up on another drive, and I would recommend copying over the .exe file to reinstall your anti-virus if you have one (or keep the disk on hand if you got one, to go ahead and protect it before you even get back on the web). Also, if you have any disks with the drivers on them, make sure to reinstall them on the clean Windows install, or else you might find that things like your audio aren't working properly, and will have to find the appropriate drivers on their websites otherwise. With Windows 7, this is most likely unnecessary. It autodetects pretty much everything.

peepinmofo
Simple cookies and internet history will not slow your PC down. Spyware will. Run malware bytes: http://www.malwarebytes.org/ If that doesnt help, check your hard drive space. If it is full, that too will slow things down. There shouldnt be a need to format anything unless something isnt working. Sure it might speed things up due to nothing being in your startup, but that is easily correctable as well. I get these videos that pop up on my screen when the comp is idle and it freezes my computer . will the malware check potentially identify what that is and get rid of it ? If you have that kind of stuff happening, that is definitely spyware. Download and install the program I mentioned. Update it a few times, and then run a full scan. I believe it has directions to do everything. If not, Id be happy to walk you through it over the phone. But only if you promise not to try to have phone sex with me (or my wife). Azazello1313
how do you check your hard drive and how do you free up space ? I get these videos of dudes sucking each other off that pop up on my screen when the comp is idle and it freezes my computer . will the malware check potentially identify what that is and get rid of it ? yeah you've got a little malware problem. malware bytes, or also go to lavasoft.com and download the free version of adaware....download and install them, then start them to let them update, then either reboot in safe mode or shut down, disconnect your network cable, and restart to let malware bytes and/or adaware scan your system. chances are they'll find lots of stuff. have them delete whatever they find, then do a fresh restart and maybe run them one more time. then reboot again and see if things are any better. Your point about my hard drive potentially being full is valid too because I get a message that says I am low on memory a lot. How can I clear out things on the hard drive that I dont need and how are your wifes boobs ?

How can I clear out things on the hard drive that I dont need and how are your wifes boobs ? Right click "My Computer" and click properties. It should give you a pie chart of how full it is. (50% or less is fine.) Then go to "Control Panel" and use the "Add or remove programs" option and see what progs you can delete. (Leave the Microsoft stuff alone). Do this AFTER you run the malware s/w in Safe Mode. Edited June 21, 2011 by rocknrobn26

How can I clear out things on the hard drive that I dont need and how are your wifes boobs ? low on (active) memory does not relate to the hard drive, that is most likely coming from the malware hogging memory. open windows explorer (or double-click "my computer"), right-click on C: and go to "properties", it will report how much used space and free space you have on your hard drive. as long as free space is 20% or so of total space, you shouldn't be having any performance issues directly related to hard drive space. whomper
Thanks again for all of your help with this thread. I checked the things you guys suggested I check and my computer was/is a trainwreck. I did the Malware scan from Peepins link. I did a total scan of all files. I tried to stay awake for it to finish but i fell asleep. I woke up at 4am and checked it really quickly and it had detected over 600 malicious items. I went back to bed and was going to clear it out when I got up and we had a power outage comp went off and ill probably have to do the scan over again. No biggie. At least I know I am loaded with crap and ill be able to get rid of it hopefully. What do I hit when the scan is complete ? Quarantine ? As far as my hard drive , it had a capacity of 36 g (i think g was the term) and I had used a little over 30 The pie was almost all used. I started removing some programs. That is a little bit of a bitch because some of the programs require a restart in order to fully uninstall and that takes forever with this slow comp. Is there another way along with removing programs/files that I could free up disk space on my hard drive ? Maybe some type of scan that eliminates junk that is taking up space that I never use ? anyway thanks again all. and thanks peepin for not letting me take the easy way out and do a wipeout . I have a little work to do to clean this up but at least I wont lose everything now. I appreciate all of your help

I appreciate all of your help this is why i like the reformat when giving my computer a new start. absolutely clean install and only put back what is absolutely needed. i've never had much luck on updating in place. maximizes your available hard drive space and does improve performance. of course, once done, you then enter a new fight on the malware, but hopefully start up with stronger protection practices,. I appreciate all of your help If you have that much spyware, you might be better off formatting at that point. haha. However, Malware bytes should find everything after a few scans and reboots. Be sure to scan several times to make sure everything is gone, and again, be sure to update it every time you scan. Somethimes there are new definitions put out a couple times a day. As for freeing up disk space, you can delete your temporary internet files, but one thing that would likely help is doing a search for *.tmp & *.chk files. Temp and check files. They are just junk files that take up space. Once you find them all, you can delete them at will as they have no real use. Sometimes this frees up a lot of space, other times it is minimal. You could also just delete all the pron you have.

Azazello1313
to clear hard drive space....uninstalling programs really doesn't always make a hugh difference. there is a disk cleanup tool (probably under programs->accessories->system tools in most windows OS's), run that and see where you end up. what I always end up doing is a search for files over say 10MB. you end up finding all kinds of crap you can delete in temp directories and such. which OS do you have again?
