I don’t think they should be able to host a game at 7-9 over a 10-6 team. How they would determine that or put a rule in for it I have no clue but that’s my opinion. Yes that would be complicated, as it stands now each conference has one team at or below .500 leading their division, but many other teams that could be wild cards that have a better record. Dallas could finish with 11-13 wins, that could be more or tied with SF or MIN, would they also get homefield? (Now only 2 division winners host?). I think the NFL as a whole (majority of owners) like the current system, win your division and you host a playoff game. Some might feel taking the home game away is a slippery slope and next would be a change to remove division winner as an automatic playoff team. I know the NBA made some change in the last 5-10 years to kind of eliminate the meaning of divisions, not sure if division winner is still an automatic playoff team, but believe they do seeding based on conference record (division winners are not the top X).
