bigbadwolf
That is just ABSURD... 1365354[/snapback] I'd need to see the payouts over the years, but yes it is insane. Can't fault Hutch thouhg, if someone wants to pay you way too much, I'd take it too. I mean I don't think the Seahawks would have matched 5 yrs and 35 mil yet alone 49 mil. Minny overpaid, simple as that.

Eventually they'll need some money for the defense in a year or two. They can't tie up all the cap in the Off, especially on a guard which is easier to replace. Of course Hutch is no ordinary guard, but still a guard.
major-tom
FOXSports.com has learned that the Vikings have signed Seahawks Pro Bowl offensive guard Steve Hutchinson to an offer sheet for a whopping $49 million over seven years. They should have used the franchise tag. It was a calculated risk but backfired it appears.

You can't have it turn into a Walter Jones situation every year where you are paying top 5 tackle money to a guard. That would kill our cap every single year. The transition tag was the only route they could go since Hutch wanted to test the FA market. They can't help it if Minny throws a insane offer out there. They were screwed either way. The fans b-tching about the Hawks messing up are either idiots or don't have a grasp of the salary cap imo.

THE SIX KINGS
profootballtalk.com HUTCHINSON '06 CAP NUMBER EXCEEDS $13 MILLION In an effort to land guard Steve Hutchinson, the Vikings have gotten his agreement on an offer sheet with a 2006 cap number in excess of $13 million. That's more than one third of the team's available cap space in the 2006 offseason, and more than twelve percent of the team's total cap room for the current year. The offer is aimed at getting the Seahawks not to exercise their right to match. They now have seven days to make a decision.
