Early top 10 defense picks for 2006

Last year in my league, here's how many pts were scored by the top 10 defenses:

Panthers - 304

Bears - 302

Steelers - 268

Giants - 264

Seahawks - 260

Colts - 254

Vikings - 254

Broncos - 248

Jaguars - 246

Buccaneers - 239

The lowest 5 teams were:

Texans - 152

Saints - 158

Raiders - 167

Patriots - 172

49ers - 186

As you can see, the top teams do have a huge advantage over the bottom teams. I decided to crunch some numbers to see who I would consider the top 10 for this year, and here's what I've come up with (based on last year's stats and this year's opponents):

1 - Chicago Bears

2 - Carolina Panthers

3 - Seattle Seahawks

4 - Minnesota Vikings

5 - New York Giants

6 - Indianapolis Colts

7 - Pittsburgh Steelers

8 - Tampa Bay Buccaneers

9 - Jacksonville Jaguars

10 - Baltimore Ravens

In no way am I saying this is a list of the 10 best defenses. This list is FF-wise based on last year's numbers, and how their opponents this year gave up FF points to defenses last year.

Now comes my question...From this list of 10, which defenses improved, which stayed the same, and which got better?

Minnesota #4. above both Pittsburgh and Baltimore? How?

They lost Corey Chavous, Cowart and Brian Williams and gained Tank Williams. I don't see them i nthe top 10 unless they get better replacements.

Agreed. I don't know if I'd even have Baltimore or Minnesota on this list to begin with.

Carolina and Chicago will again be the cream of the crop.

The Seahawks have certainly improved and merit a spot in the top 5.

Tampa Bay and the Steelers will again be very solid and should be higher.

evaluating defenses is pretty tough anyway but what scoring does your league (or this list) consider? It is not until you add in "points allowed" or "yards allowed" that defenses begin to become reasonably predictable.

The numbers I came up with are based on last year's stats and this year's opponents for each team. I was just as shocked as you to see Minny ranked way up there, but this list hasn't taken into account any player losses/gains for this year. Do I think Minny will finish at #4? No way, Jose! I would draft about 12-15 teams before them.

Here is the scoring my league uses:

Fumble Recovery - 2

Interception - 2

Interception Return Yards - 1 point for every 10

Blocked Field Goal - 2

Blocked Extra Point - 2

Sack - 2

Safety - 2

Shutout - 8

Total Net Yards Allowed (0-199) - 8

Total Net Yards Allowed (200-259) - 6

Total Net Yards Allowed (260-319) - 4

Total Net Yards Allowed (320-379) - 2

Defensive & Special Teams TD - 6

And under those scoring rules, Minny ended up 7th last year, I swear. Then I calculated the avg pts given up last year to defenses by each team. It turns out that Minny has a great defensive FF schedule, and they ended up moving into the 4th spot for this year. But, like I said, it's all just stats based on last year. No player moves for 2006 have been factored in. The list is just meant to be a starting point to figure out which teams may move up or down on the list. And yes, I have Minny moving way down.

I agree - I would move them way down:

New Coaches, New Scheme (Tampa 2) - Defensive ends need to be solid in that defense - Udeze and James??? Linebackers - too many question marks now - whos playing where and how each one will fit into the new defense. Corners and Safety are probably the only solid unit out there.

Special teams - its all new. Not sure who will be returning kicks or punts this year.

Basically its to early to tell on alot of this stuff until training camp and beyond...

In the HAG leagues they were 7th too but there the Giants were #1, the Titans were #4 and Rams were #5.

In my league STL and TEN finished just out of the top 10. Nuts, huh? The STL defense is pitiful, but somehow they managed to score FFL points. I think I will be moving Atlanta and Washington up into my top 10 list, but I will still have Chicago and Carolina as the frontrunners.
