He obviously makes some questionable decisions in big games, but he also knows how to put a team together and get them to the playoffs in the first place. If so, bad big game coach but assembles great teams could = great GM??? In San Diego, he has nothing to do w/player evaluation and signing. He is provided the players by AJ Smith and expected to coach what he is given. I think Marty is near the end as well. One of the reasons that I wanted him to go was because I don't want to lose Cameron (O coord). If Cameron does not go to another team, and there has been a lot of interest, then he can be groomed for one more year na d take over the Chargers at that point. This also allows the Bolts to start looking for a new coach with a year's anticipation instead of settleing for what is left. There are no super options for the Chargers at this point, the smartest move would have been to promote from within to retain continuity. I didn't realize 'till some research today that Cam was not a great HC in college. Though his teams produced offensively, he had a losing record as the head man. Is he ready to take that next step to HC of an NFL team? He could be the next Gibbs, or just another coordinator who is good at what he does, but not a good/great HC (see Wade Phillips). Time will tell. Some interesting questions. - If Loften goes to the Raiders and Cameron goes somewhere as a HC (Miami?) what do the Chargers do with their offense? (Could effect fantasy values as well!) Does Marty take control of the O and revert to a more conservative style? It worked for Cower last year (though he did open things up during the playoffs). - Who is out there that can keep this offense rolling if Cam goes? - Does Marty come back even if he wins the SB bowl next year? Or does he pull the plug? Go out on a high? - Who do the Chargers start eyeing now in anticipation of Marty leaving? In reality, this was probably the only thing at this point the Chargers could do. Though his teams produced offensively, he had a losing record as the head man. Not that it matters but I know some guys who played under him at IU and to man they say Cameron was a real horse's a-ss. And as time goes on he expects something bad to happen. It seems to affect his decision making. He should just let someone else make all the calls in big games to get over the hump. They way I heard it on Sirius is that there was a club option for $4.5M and if they didn't exercise, there was a $1M buy-out, which if exercised, means he'd get the $1M AND be able to shop his services. Except I don't necessarily agree that he'd get a job as quickly as you think. He may, but he may not. He's got a great regular season record, but let's face it, he's not going to win you a SB and there are number of clubs who think that's kind of important. A re-building franchise may opt for a younger, less expensive coach so like I said, I don't necessarily agree that he'd be hired right away.
