My current favorite German beers

For approximately one night per week for the past few months I have been getting a few bottles of various types of German beers and conducting my own "taste-testings". The following beers are the ones that I think I have liked the best. (I'm not competant to describe their tastes to you, but I figured it might be worth seeing what I favor over here.)

Paulaner Hefeweizen Dunkel -- I know that back a few months ago I said that I didn't really care all that much for wheat beers, well, I have smartened up since then.

Ruppaner Edel Pils -- Produced by a small local brewery near my apartment in Konstanz, this is my favorite German pils. (In general, everything I have tried from this brewery has been excellent.)

Köstritzer Schwarzbier -- Sort of like what Guinness would be if Guinness were a German lager.

I will update this list as I see fit over my last few weeks of being over here.

I was in Frankenmuth this weekend and absolutely loved that beer. I'm a sucker for dark stuff anyway, but that was very very good.

Have you tried Aventinus Weisse Doppelbock? I had a half-liter of with a plate of schnitzel and it rocketed up to my all-time top three. Obviously a wheat doppelbock, but SO clean and SO tasty . . . I am seriously contemplating weekly runs to Frankenmuth just to keep the stuff around.

I've had the schwarzbier, and love that style. dark but not really pungent. never seen the paulaner dunkel stateside, even though their hefe is everywhere. would definitely love to try it.

Try the Franziskaner Dunkel - By far my favorite beer and tatses even better right from the tap.

OK, I gave another go at it on Wednesday night and it still just doesn't do it for me. It was better than the Erdinger Dunkel that I tasted along with it. (I also had the Franziskaner Hefe-Weisse Hell and the Paulaner Hefe-Weißbier Naturtrüb, of which I liked the Paulaner better.)

Ever try Warsteiner's Dunkel?

You and Mrs W need to ferry on over here when you get back - one of the Milwaukee 'burbs has an Oktoberfest that is family-friendly AND a pretty good time.

Decided tonight would be a hefe-weizen night. Currently drinking (in order of most favorite to least favorite):

Ruppaner Hefe-Weizen--this is a very good Hefe-Weizen and it is my favorite of the evening

Paulaner Hefe-Weißbier Naturtrüb--drank this as my "frame of reference beer". I actually like it as much as I like the Ruppaner, but since I know that the Ruppaner isn't available in America, I put the Ruppaner as my favorite beer tonight just to be an a-hole  )

Schöfferhofer Hefeweizen--not bad, but I won't feel compelled to buy it again

Alpirsbacher Klosterbräu Weizen Hefe Hell--this is really not good at all. I must say that I am surprised because Alpirsbacher is generally regarded as a decent brewery (and it has a picture of a monk on it--how the hell can a beer with a monk on it taste so bad?!?) It took me a while, but I finally realized that it tasted somewhat similar to the baby cereal that we feed my ten-month old (which is supposedly flavored as "apple-banana-zweibach toast"). I may not finish this beer.

Edit to add: I also had a Rothaus Hefe Weizen earlier in the day when we were visiting a botanical garden. I had to drink it out of the bottle, so it's somewhat hard to compare it to the beers I have poured into glasses, but I did like it and I will buy it again.

One of my friends came to Germany for a visit and for his first night here I bought the following beers for us to drink so that he could get a sample of what Germany had to offer:

Alpirsbacher Klosterbrau Kloster Naturtrub

Paulaner Original Munchner Hell

Altenmunster Maibock Hell

Ruppaner Edel Pils

Ruppaner Hefe-Weizen

Paulaner Salvator

Köstritzer Schwartzbier

Erdinger Dunkel

I liked all of these beers, but the Maibock was a little weird.

wiegie, have you tried the augustiner yet...... imo better bier than the other bier gartens/halls.

augustiner

I am way behind on the thread here, but I'll play the "just got back" card.

Augustiner LagerBeir Hell and the Augustiner Weissbeir are the best

Ever
