Ingram overrated ?

You guys think Mark Ingram is over rated???

There seems to be quite a few RBs on New Orleans......and he has not been averaging any large runs. He looks to be just like goalline back if anything right now......I know hes a good back but this year you think he'll put up big numbers? Hes rated pretty high on the tier list

thoughts?

As a rookie, we will not know how his value is until we actually see it in games. And there are plenty of reasons why he could be over-valued:

* Untested rookie

* Possbile/probably RBBC with Pierre Thomas and Darren Sproles at the least

* Saints have been a pass-happy team historically and not used a heavy-duty runner

* Brought in Sproles for the receiver role

But

* Highly drafted with expectations

* Appears to be best goal line option

* Arguably the most "all around back" in terms of probable talent

* Saints point at the success rushing in 2009 for their SB and want to return to that instead of rotating mutts

* No team can load up against the run when playing NO.. at least not for long

* Fantasy Football loves nothing more than a rookie RB

Rookie RB's are ALWAYS overrated, it seems. Anyone remember the 2nd coming of Ladanian Tomlinson known as Ryan Mathews? I think everyone is going to be in for a big disappointment.

You may be right. But since I did this for a previous thread.

Mark Ingram - Heisman winner as a junior, set Alabama rushing record as a soph, has a knee injury as a jr. but still all three years were double digit TDs with 5+ YPC. Played SEC and averaged 150 yards oer game against six top 25 opponents in title run.

Ryan Mathews - only had one good season which was 1808 yards and 19 TDs leading the nation in rushing while playing for Fresno State.

And i remember reading that now, too.

However, I'm still wary of the hype given to rookie RBs. I've been sucked in too many times.

Also, it bears mentioning that the potential upside was already priced in with Matthews, with people often drafting him in the first and second rounds... Part of what I like about Ingram (in addition to everything I've liked about him since he ran so hard in that NC game he started convulsing), is that you're generally seeing him go 4th round and in some cases a good bit later... Going of the board as a RB2/3 with upside, I LOVE him, whereas Matthews with a RB1 ADP last year was an easy pass for me...

I wasn't in the game last year but was amazed when I saw where guys were taking Matthews. It made no sense at all. But I've been paid off handsomely enough with 4th round rookie RBs in the past to feel good about Ingram there.

This thread should be locked and stopped here for the sake of not having an Ingram debate. Djk80---see the thread called "NOS RB SITUATION" or something like that. It is 11 pages of bickering about Mark Ingram.

In defense of those who bought in on the Matthews hype train, Norv Turner pulled one over on people pretty good by calling for "250 carries and 40 catches" for the top-drafted rookie at his position, and at that time there didn't appear to be anyone standing in his way...

Maybe it's been the quiet preseason showings so far, but I'm starting to think that people getting snakebit by Matthews last year is part of what's preventing them from really believing in this guy, who I think easily has the talent to overcome "situation".

 Fitting nickname for a Falcons homer.

BTW, I'm staying out of this one. I feel I've fed the hype train more than enough even though it was never my intent.

i drafted mathews 11th overall last year and it killed my team.

so what do i do this year? i doubled down and drafted ingram in the third round.

if this doesn't work out, i'll probably be leery of drafting another rookie within the first four rounds for a long time. i did draft thomas though.

at the very least, ingram is more appealing than foster right now.

Are you talking because of Vick? Hardy har har, but even though I've defended his "second chance" to get his SHAM WOW! together, I did go to that Eagles game at the GA Dome a couple years back with the sole intent of booing him (which backfired as he lit the Falcons up and 1/2 our fans cheered him on )... But I am a lifelong UGA "Dawg" Fan & Grad, so I like the nickname...

Honestly, as much as I'd like to rip on a Saints player, I don't think the guy is getting the hype he deserves... But then again, up until recently I didn't think PT was that close to looking like he could bounce back and steal carries either, so maybe I should tap the brakes a little bit too for this year.

I've watched Ingram run all over SEC defenses the last 3 years. I don't doubt his talent or ability to carry the load. I have issues with his workload. Sproles will take the majority of 3rd down/passing down situations and a healthy Thomas will swipe carries. The final straw is he's a rookie.

If you havent noticed yet, you soon will see that there are a hugh number of people who start a brand new thread (seemingly whenever a thought pops into their head) without ever spending the 10 seconds or so it takes to scan the first page of threads to see if there is already one (or more) on the same topic...

Well I can say you're one notch above a typical Falcons fan, I figured you for one of the one's who wore their Vick jersey to the game.

All kidding aside, yeah I agree. While I think long term he will be the player he's hyped as being, if someone is expecting him to be a top RB this year and carrying their team during the season then they are likely going to be a bit disappointed. I'll tell you the one thing that impresses me the most about him is not his physical talents, but his shear desire. There's just something about him that makes me think we could be looking at a really great player... and I've thought that about him well before he was a Saints player and I loathe Alabama to boot, so you can throw the homerism aside.

This post reminded me how you tried to police the thread creation insanity last year... People will do what they do. I think at what point we had like 4 or 5 Favre threads at the top of the list.

I think Randy Moss had a bunch of threads going during that whole sequence of getting traded to MIN, then waived by MIN, then signed by TEN, then fading into oblivion.

I've tried to curtail here and there but am always yelled at for being a board police...

Though I still like to post:

what makes you so special that you deserve to start a new thread on this?

since the forums are filled with witty, sarcastic folks, the thread keeps going after their slam on me.

I seem to recall it was the half-dozen threads on Vincent Jackson on the first half of the first page at one time

I'll never understand why it doesnt piss more people off when the forum gets all snarled up with redundant threads created by someone either too lazy to look and see if there is already one going on the topic or too self-absorbed to care. Maybe it does but they dont say anything. Whatever the case, you were right it is a complete lost cause trying to draw people's attention to it and I flat out avoid this place on weekends during the season because it is just a friggin mess. If it aint the 6 threads about the exact same player/topic, its the vast assortment of "What is going on with player x?" and "Is so-and-so hurt??" threads 7 mins into the games
