QB platoons

A question for owners who implement a strategy of waiting to draft QB's and then putting together a platoon in the later rounds.

Do you spend much time analyzing how the two QB's schedules will mesh before the draft?

When i've tried a platoon in the past I've shown exceptional talent for leaving points on the bench...my league doesn't reward said talent.

Do you tend to favor two consistent but less flashy QB's who's ADPs are just out of QB1 range - say Flacco + Eli.

Or, do you favor bigger upside and count on getting the WDIS right - say Fitzpatrick + McCoy

(probably not the best examples, but according to the ADP tool those QB's are being drafted after 12QB's are gone.)

Thanks for any pointers.

I'm typically a guy who doesn't draft a QB until later, and I mix the two strategies you listed above. I try to get one guy like Eli or Flacco, who I KNOW will get me points every week, even if they're tier 2, then depending on roster size, grab two guys with hugh upside like Stafford, McCoy, Bradford, Kolb or even Newton (as a 3rd).

This is my general strategy when I don't find some value earlier on. I figure the guy like Eli is who I start most weeks until the high upside guy is either proving he is living up to what I thought he could do or he has a good matchup.

On one roster, I got the ulitmate crap QBBC: Sanchez / Cassel / Orton and then I picked up Collins today.

I do not recommend this for the faint of heart. Some Shark Vac drafted Schaub in the third round, when he already had Brees. I wasn't ready to pull the trigger on a guy like Eli that early, and another owner grabbed him. At that point, nothing left.

So here I am, weekly QB Russian Roulette.

This isn't going to help your thread at all, but I've lost way too many fantasy games in my life by picking the wrong QB matchup. I'll probably never let QB slide again. Pick a stud QB and go with him every week. Play matchups at your other positions.

Completely agree. I drafted Rodgers at 1.7 in one league, and 1.9 in another. After that other debacle, damn glad I did. There's at least one idiot in every league that will take two qbs in the first five rounds.

Thing is, in my QBBC situation, Brees was his friggin keeper! I'll never see a Brees, Brady, or a Rodgers on my roster in that league.

Meh... I don't think it's a bad strategy at all. I grabbed Staffors, Bradford, Cutler late and was able to use the picks before to get quality at other positions. I figure the first two have HUGH upside, and Cutler is a gunslinger himself... Depending on where I am in the draft order dictates whether or not I grab a solid QB earlier, but in this case I feel like the lack of production I may get from a week-in, week-out points getter at QB will be made up for by getting quality at the other positions.

Stafford and Bradford is my favorite QBBC this year, followed by Stafford/Kolb. The first two are both young and relatively inexperienced, but positively oozing with talent. I think all three of those QBs have enough upside to make me comfortable with a roster of any two of them. Plus you can mesh their matchups pretty darn well, especially with Stafford/Bradford.

by QB schedule (and using the ease of schedule on the huddle), i went with Eli and Flacco together. Together I have these matchups between teh 2 of them

Wash / STL / STL / NYJ / SEA / HOU / JAX / ARI / NE / SEA / PHI / SF / CLE / DAL / WAS / CLE

Got them in my 10 team league in round 9 and 10. This allowed me to get Mendenhall, Mccoy, V Jax, Wallace, Manningham and Holmes for my main skills spots. I also picked up Collins for a 3rd qb just in case he pans out because the Indy schedule is the most QB friendly in the league. first time i'm trying the platoon and this is the only league that i'm trying it in. i like that i was able to build the top rb/wr/flex options in my league, but i'm now counting on 2 mid tier qbs every week and banking on their schedule matchups. the jury is out til the end of the year with me.

Thanks everyone. I think next year I'll try using a platoon in at least one of my leagues. Looking at the schedule first and then mixing a steady QB2 with some of the younger upside guys seems like a way to tweak the strategy.

In my main league I probably will favor going a bit earlier on QB because I've had the same frustrations as Seahawks21. I understand and buy the strategy of waiting on QB in terms of draft value...I just know that I tend to overthink the matchups.

In my leagues this year I ended up getting good value for Big Ben in two leagues and Ryan in another...so no discount platoons.
