Just saw it on the 11 0'clock news. That's pretty amazing stuff, not to mention scary as hell. :D

And it was a sperm whale. :D

CBS) UWAJIMA BAY, Japan A group of Japanese fishermen trying to help a stranded whale videotaped a frightening site. The whale knocked over a small boat, killing one of their colleagues.

It happened Tuesday in Uwajima Bay.

Noriyuki Yamamoto died in the accident. He and two other fishermen had joined in a rescue operation by local people when the sperm whale suddenly hit the boat.

The two other fishermen were also tossed into the sea, but they were later rescued.

Local fishermen and officials were trying to coax the whale, about 50 feet long, into the open sea.

Well I was way off. Turns out they were trying to help it. :D

Here is an interesting book about another sperm whale attacking a ship:

In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex

(The story of the Essex inspired Moby Dick.)

Saw that on Discovery or History Channlel...those people had amazing heart to survive. I often wonder if I have that extra bit in me.

I imagine whales hanging out in the Sea of Japan have put two and two together and identify boats as a threat.

That's a good point.... :D

 After reading your post I did a search for "How smart are whales" because I've also heard elsewhere that whales are very intelligent, and have pretty large brains (something like that). So anyway, after alittle investigating I think I found some clues from the Sperm Whale incident in 2006, and then another clue several years ago in the 2004 Sperm Whale incident. This could indicate some other possible "theory" for why the Sperm whale attacked the fishermen boat... :D
