muck
...from a newsletter I get from time to time... "Is London part of England?" An outwardly innocent question, but I knew it would send my London cabbie into an emotional outburst. For him and many others like him, London is foreign. London is not England anymore because the British are a cultural minority there. If you really want to find England you have to go to York, Manchester, or some other provincial center where the traditions still live. As a New Yorker, who has spent many hours in North Carolina and Virginia trying to explain my city and its ways to people down there, I know that New York is not the United States, and the gap between the two is growing wider each year. The same can be said for Shanghai, Dubai, and other global market centers. They are more like each other than their hinterlands. Their culture is global. I guess that explains why Hillary got elected in NY.

Ill Nuts
Duluth isn't really Minnesota anymore, it's more Wisconsin now
Kid Cid
I get the point but I think that is a statement that could be made about any city with a diverse population. Of course the more homogenous the diverse cultures within the city become, the less like the hinterlands the city itself becomes. It's one of those things that seems incredibly obvious but only after someone points it out to you.

Bill Swerski
I guess that explains why Hillary got elected in NY. And why she won't get elected as President
AtomicCEO
NYC doesn't need your approval. They've got people piled 5 high fighting to live in such a great place, driving property values through the roof. If you don't like it, that's probably ok with them. I can only imagine it's the same in London.
