CaptainHook
Pottsville Maroons beat the Cardinals late in the season, but then scheduled a game against a team of former Notre Dame players. They were forbidden to play the game by the commissioner, but played anyways. The club was fined, suspended, forbidden to play in the NFL title game, and had to return it's franchise to the league. The Cardinals, who ended the season with the best record in the league were named champs. Edited August 7, 2007 by CaptainHook

The Cards then scheduled a game against a team that was semi=pro at best in order to get a late-season victory.

I got my info from the NFL Record and Fact Book under Chronology of Professional Football. I'm pretty sure it is correct.
