detlef
Every now and then, I like to put together a mix of tunes for my wife to drive to work that sort of push the envelope a bit for her. Like many couples, I imagine, I a much bigger music geek than her, so it can be a bit of a challenge finding something that's a bit outside her comfort zone but she'll like anyway. A good example is when I made a workout mix for her and included My Doorbell by White Stripes. At that point, she'd never heard of them and came back from the gym talking about how much she dug the tune. Thing is, even now she's not that into White Stripes in general. The same with Cocaine Diana by Kid Loco. That sort of thing. The stuff she always listened to prior to us getting together was, well besides Lilith-chick-rock, Bruce Springsteen, Van Morrison, Ry Cooder, Greg Brown, pretty much that sort of stuff. The type of stuff you might expect an Ohio girl to have grown up on. Any of you all have something in mind that might fit the bill? That is, the most easy to digest offerings of otherwise edgy bands? I make my wife CDs like this every year or more often, too. I'm putting one together for Christmas today, and I'll post the tracklist as soon as it's done. TIA to Clubfoothead, because at least half of the songs on this most recent one are bands that he introduced me to.

I don't know how "edgy" these are, but my wife likes them: "Oh no"--Shivaree "Fade into You"--Mazzie Star "Few Feet Away"--Otis Taylor "Sly"--The Cat Empire "A Girl Like You"--Edwyn Collins "Busting Up a Starbucks"--Mike Doughty "Is you is or is you ain't my Baby?"--Dinah Washington (verve remixed) "Roll it Over"--Derek and the Dominos (from the Layla and other assorted love songs album...a truly nasty song) "Smoke Two Joints"--The Toyes "Use What You Got"--Sugar Pie DeSanto PowerSearch them on iTunes to get a feel. Hope that helps.

Capt Skinman
This is a new hard rockin band I just got turned on to. I can best describe em as a mix of Pantera and Social Distortion. Does she like the dancy disco? Goldfrapp- Strict Machine ....or maybe a little 80s new wave retro sound? ....A little harder to describe Two from my favorite basitar, sax, drums trio, Morphine. My favorite 90s band to pimp that never got the recognition I felt they deserved. Singer and two-string bass, Mark Sandman, died in 99 on stage in Italy. Sad, Low and Melancholy (The Night) Their Cure For Pain album is classic. ..... yet another softer sound under the radar Badly Drawn Boy
detlef
So here's the final list. Thanks to everyone for their help. The evidence of said help is rather apparent. Special shout out to Oh No by Shiveree. That's a pretty cool song. Skinman, nice reminder of Morphine. She totally digs the Soprano's theme song and I remember digging Buena back in the day. So, I mixed in a few classics, a few familiar ones, and just enough love songs... Meditacao -- Nara Leao Oh No -- Shivaree Size Too Small -- Sufjan Stevens Question -- Old 97's Ya Yo No -- Andrea Echeverri Sly -- The Cat Empire Tell Me 'Bout It -- Joss Stone Buena -- Morphine The Guns of Brixton -- The Clash The Denial Twist -- White Stripes The Love Cats -- The Cure Think I'm In Love -- Beck Old Time Lovin' -- Al Green Salt -- Lizz Wright Cinnamon -- The Long Winters Intuition -- Feist New Lace Sleeves -- Elvis Costello Hindue Blues -- Kevin Johansen & The Nada Heartbeats -- José González Vivid -- Greg Brown
