And then he left via a door that I didn't even know existed. That door went right to the penguin pool and I am pretty sure Twiley was banging a penguin that night.

Good times.

Apparently I called my wife when I went to visit the penguins because she kept saying that I was yelling at them and cussing them out. She thought I was on some good drugs and hallucinating. :D

"Did you see the size of that penguin." - Young Guns reference.

I know what you mean about the comps. Thing is, when Vegas started the slots were essentially in place to keep wives happy so usbands would play the table games more. Over time though, the casinos found they were making more money on the machines and geared their promotion towards those players, thus the reason it is easier to get comped, often for a lower level of play, if you play slots, etc. rather than table games.

I'm hoping to squeeze a trip in before WCOFF. I have a friend that is really pushing for me to plan a trip with him, but as I prefer to sit in the poker room for hours on end and he is not much of a poker player, I'm not so sure I would enjoy the trip so much if it is just the two of us. I just have a hard time flat out telling him that I don't think it would be that enjoyable going with just him. I may try go solo to my wife's chagrin, or will try plan something with some other poker playing friends, as that makes it a bit easier. The only thing is, since I prefer to play poker, and there are plenty of equally good rooms locally, I'd rather save up the Vegas days for "events" like WCOFF and go for a longer period (trying to pull off Thursday to Monday this year)

Yeah I know but didn't know if RR had the magic touch.

They are very strict with comps, I can get a free room anytime I want to go there but I have to be there and can only get 1. I even tried to get my inlaws room comped when we got married at the Flamingo before hand but couldn't, of course they took care of it when we were leaving but couldn't do it ahead of time. It would of been nice to just have a series of rooms booked for free but they frown on that :D, unless of course you really step up the bets. I have some friends that recieve "free chips" and airfare just to bring them out, but they gamble on a completely different level then anyone here.

Yeah, your comps and my hilton points are completely different. Mine are basically dollar for dollar spent, yearly service fees, and other things. You just have to sit on your duff for 30 hours drinking and gambling and having a good time in order to get comped rooms. I'm getting hosed. :D

Generally speaking, the BJ rules at the Harrah's properties are weak with a lot of 6-5 blackjack, dealer hitting on soft 17, and auto-shufflers. If you are a BJ player (which I am not much of one anymore thanks to my love for all things craps), take a walk over to the MGM/Mirage properties or smaller-company owned casinos.

Since I play craps, the rules for craps are pretty much the same up and down the strip with the exception of the 100x craps at Casino Royale (which i'll pass on because the casino is a dump and it's uncomfortably crowded around the table) and that the 12 only pays double for a field bet as opposed to tripple. It doesn't affect me because playing the field is dumb anyway.

The best I seem to do is casino rate at the Harrahs properties. I am strictly a table game player and apparently not high enough to warrent anything more than a gold player card.

I only have experience with three different property groups. The Harrahs group that is not Harrahs any longer. The One Club group that may or may not be the Mandalay, Luxor, Excalibur, and Monte Carlo properties. And the Strat.

All three of these groups seemed to work very differently for me even though my gambling is always pretty much the same.

Harrahs group was fine up until about a year or so ago. Now I get a free room for sure Sunday - Thursday but might have to pay for a weekend or at least pay something for a weekend. Most of my meals seemed to be covered when I check out.

One Club, (mainly Monte Carlo), never seemed to like to give me much upfront but always cleared the bill in the end. Even when I stayed in a suit and had some extra money spent on dining as well as a Lance Burton show. I just don't like that they don't give me anything upfront so I have not stayed with them for about a year and a half.

The Strat is out on a freaking island compared to the other properties but they treated us like royalty. Room upgrades without asking. Food vouchers for everywhere to the point that we could not even use them all. Show tickets to anything that they had showing. Overall I could not and would not ever complain about the Strat other than needing to jump a cab to go anywhere. That said, there is a new owner and the mail has really slowed down from them. Part of that might be that I have not stayed with them for about a year but my next trip just might have me back down there to see if anything has changed. Also, the Black Jack rules are much better down there, (or they were), but the problem is that it is hard to find a decent full table of green chippers anytime other than prime time.

I have no experience with the MGM/Mirage group but I have heard some decent things from some people that I know play about the same game as I do.

Point is, I don't like to chase comps and I don't really care where I stay so long as it is not a dump or to far off the beaten path. I am not sure if I signed up for a player card out at the Orleans but that is another one that I would consider but I have not gotten any mail from them and I have played out there a little. I am at the point that I am going to boycott the bad black jack games and I am not going to stay with someone that is not going to hook me up a little up front.

Darin and I will most likely be within walking distance of the Strat at WCOFF. HIlton has 3 properties down there that I can use my points for (Hilton Hotel, Hilton on Karen, and Hilton on the Strip which I stayed at this past WCOFF) .

I love the Orleans and once spent an entire weekend Thursday - Sunday in there without leaving except to go back to the airport and with very little sleep. It was a blast!

Me and Bier and a buddy of mine stayed there for WCOFF last year. It's not that bad. Right across the street from a good gentlemen's club  which turns into a "club club" after-hours. It's not TOO far off the strip but you gotta cab to-from the strip for sure. But for the money, it's fantastic. Good table action (just ask whomper :D), good bars, good food. Had a blast there and would have no problem staying there again if I was unable to land a strip hotel for a good rate.

Fantastic trip report RR. Thanks so much for it. I wish I could add a lot, but I've never stayed at the Flamingo, and frankly can't remember if I've even been inside.

I will say this. . .The comp system in casinos all over the country has gotten really insulting. For the non-high roller, it's really turned into a dry well. Customer service has given way to number crunching accountants. And the result is pretty discouraging: Unless you play slots (or as it should be called: donate money directly to the casino), they don't want to have much to do with you. I play poker between 30 and 40 hours a week and get either $1 or $2 per hour depending on what stakes I'm playing. So, if I play a full schedule for 2 weeks, I can just about have a quality meal at one of the upscale restaurants (by myself), or a buffet for 2 and a sandwich the next day. The Shiekette's mom plays PENNY slots twice a week and she gets showered with free rooms, half price buffets. . .it's just amazing.

The last time I was in Tunica, which was 2002 the comps were much better. I got into town late and was hungry. I went to the $5 blackjack table at the Horseshoe and played 2 hands (won the 1st, pushed the 2nd). I called the pit boss over and said "Hey, I'm kinda hungry. . any chance I could get a buffet?" I thought I was going to get laughed at, but I had heard they were good about comps. The guy wrote me up a buffet ticket right there, no comp card asked for. Wow. That was 6 years ago now, so I don't know if it's still that friendly. After dinner, I felt so guilty I went back and played for another hour! And what a buffet they had too. . .southern heaven! Fried okra, BBQ station, crawdad bar, catfish. Vegas and AC could learn a lot from Mississippi when it comes to keeping the customers happy and fed. Of course by now, maybe the accountants have made their way south. . .

Again, great report!

RR send your cheatsheet I would love to see it.

PM me your email.

RR,

I know what you are saying about the comps and table games, trust me on this :D You do need to get a casino host to ehlp you with these things go, next time ask for "The Godfather" and he will hook you up as much as he can. Just ask anyone that was with us at WCOFF when I got the Hotel shuttle bus to take us all, about 10-15 of us, to the Orleans and I wasn't even staying at the Flamingo at the time. I had just been there the week or 2 before and The Godfather knew me instantly and hooked us right up. The GO rooms at the Flamingo are very nice and are highly recommended as well. When I play Blackjack there my average bet is probably around $50 and I play for long periods of time as well, usually too long as Skippy, Twiley, Bier can all atest to as I gave back 1K plus of winnings while drinking entirely too much and having a great time with a great bunch of guys

The 46 Steakhouse has been recommded by me in every Vegas Eat thread and I have enjoyed it there since it was Conrads, we always used to get a comp meal there and the French Onion soup is out of this world. As you said you pay $$$$ for a meal there without a doubt.

Did you see our Girl Claudeen while you were there? She has never once failed to recoginze me or the Missus when we are there, always a pleasure to talk to.

I will be in Vegas the first week in April for business and will be staying at the Flamingo since my conference is at the Sands convention center. I hope to be able to upgrade to a suite with my comps since the Gov is paying the regular room rate.

I will let you know how it goes for me then RR. I am glad you guys had a great time as always.

T....

I had more HOSTS than I can shake a stick at. And every time I go go back I get a new one who only wants to deal w/ Whales! :brew:

You know what would be a good idea? If somebody created a website specifically for people to make posts about their trips to Vegas.

:D

:D You have turned into an effete snob since your trip to Germany! *sigh* When are you coming back to reality, i.e.the US?

I hear you bro. It just pisses me off that THEY want to turn Vegas into a massive "Slots of Fun". :D

Never saw Claudine. But would love to be there w/ you and play some w/ her as our Boss! :D

Sheik,

Thanks for the reply! Am I mistaken or aren't you a dealer? Just curious.

Regardless, your reply was point on!

TY, again! :)
