Identity Theft might hit me!

I purchased a home not too long ago (less than a yr ago). Well I decided to try LendingTree.com and their rates sucked big time. I know some people who had success but the rates they gave me were horrible so I did not use them. Not only did they call me for 3 months almost everyday and I was telling them I already for a mortgage, but they persisted to call almost every damn day (which pissed me off). Well yesterday I got a mail from them stating that someone internal stole their database and sold it to a third party and of course my information was on that database.

So not I am in high identity theft crisis. They offered some BS service to check my identity theft for 1 yr but now I am just going to sign up to a company that monitors it for me. I dont care if they are expnensive but I do not want to go through the hassle of anyone stealing my identity.

You recommend a GOOD service for this? I know it was discussed many time and I guess I will do a search and scroll through some old posts but this was a vent/asking for help thread.

Unfreakingbelievable!

Do not use lendingtree.com ever!

College Invest lost a hard drive with my info on it recently.

There probably should be higher requirements for giving someone credit under your name. I hate the face that it's so easy if you just have the information that everyone seems to collect.

Same thing happened to me through my employer and they gave everyone a year of Experian's service. https://www.experiandirect.com/triplealert/default.aspx

I've been very pleased with it and will probably keep it after the year is up. Luckily nothing has happened that I needed to be aware of but it's nice to be able to see your credit reports and score any time.

I will probably try this. Thanks.

I think LendingTree will pay for 1 yr sub for me

Has anybody tried Lifelock at $10 a month?A friend of mine recently signed up for it,I'll have to ask him what he thinks.

http://www.lifelock.com/

My brother uses it and has been 100% satisfied. I think my entire family is about to follow his lead on this one.

It's already come into use as his wallet with SS card, all of his credit cards and drivers license were all inside.

That's just stupid. There is no need to carry your Social Security Card.

I'm fricking disgusted that I should have to pay for a service to protect me because credit card companies and banks don't check to see that the person who applied is who they say they are.

THAT SHOULD BE THE BANKS RESPONSIBILITY.

Guess what, if you send a credit card with my name on it to someone other than me, that is your fault. You eat that cost. You clean up my credit. You pay me a fine. You suffer for your incredibly lax security policy. After all, it's your money you're giving away. Pay attention.

Check this out

Guy tears up a credit card application, then tapes it back together, and gets a credit card application processed to a different address than his.

Ridiculous.

Whatever your paying these services you can do for free yourself if you stay on top of it. Actually they even admit you can.

any of the big 3......equifax, transunion

you need a police report to put a permanent identity theft/fraud alert onto your credit file.

You don't need a police report to put a freeze on your credit in NY, which I believe Mr.Ted is from. You can freeze your credit initially for absolutely free at each of the big 3. You get a pin number to unlock it and I believe it is $5 for each time you unfreeze it and then another $5 to re-freeze. Nobody is gonna approve your credit if they can't view your report. I just bought a home myself and am in the process of freezing my credit as I don't have any need for anymore at this point. Of course the big 3 don't want you to freeze your report so they don't make it exactly easy for you to do. Here are the links:

http://www.experian.com/consumer/help/states/ny.html

http://www.transunion.com/corporate/person...rityFreeze.page

ETA: Previously, I had purchased the FICO quarterly monitoring. It will send you an email if someone seeks credit in your name and you get 4 TransUnion reports a year for $50.

If I want this for me and my wife, do I have to sign us up individually?

edit: Nevermind...I found my answer in FAQ--I have to order one for me and one for my wife.
