DETROIT (AP)—The Detroit Tigers’ longtime baseball broadcaster Ernie Harwell has died. He was 92.

Harwell called Tigers games for more than four decades and was one of Michigan’s most beloved sports figures. Team spokesman Brian Britten said Tuesday that the team learned about Harwell’s death from his agent.

Harwell, a Hall of Fame announcer who called Detroit Tigers games for four-plus decades and was acquired by the Brooklyn Dodgers for a catcher, announced in September that he had been diagnosed with inoperable cancer of the bile duct. Then 91, he took the news with characteristic poise, saying he planned to continue working on a book and other projects.

Harwell started with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1948 and continued with the New York Giants and Baltimore Orioles before joining the Tigers in 1960.

The Baseball Hall of Fame honored Harwell in 1981 with the Ford C. Frick Award, given annually to a broadcaster for major contributions to baseball.

Harwell died Tuesday at his home in Novi, northwest of Detroit, according to the Detroit Free Press. The Tigers did not have additional details about his death.

RIP Ernie!

I remember listening to him every summer growing up as my friend's dad always had the Tigers on the radio in the garage or in the car or out fishing on the boat. Mike Greenberg said something along the lines that announcers are the "sound" of baseball and Ernie Harwell was definitely the sound of baseball for me for many, many years! One of the greats!

Ernie was the sound of Tigers baseball growing up. RIP Ernie.

Never really heard many stories about him until somewhat recently. What a class act. Heard some great stories on Rome and ESPN today... saw his speech in Detroit maybe last year or something that was incredible.. True legend to be certain. RIP
