posty
http://apnews1.iwon.com//article/20100511/D9FKRRGG1.html NEW YORK (AP) - A prequel to the Starz channel's hit series "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" is in the works. Andy Whitfield played the gladiator hero in its breakout first season and will briefly appear in the prequel. But co-stars Lucy Lawless and John Hannah take center stage for the six-episode miniseries leading up to Spartacus' arrival as a captured Thracian slave. Shooting begins in New Zealand this summer. Production of the "Spartacus" series' second season was postponed this spring when Whitfield was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The cable television network says Whitfield is responding well to treatment. The network said Tuesday it looks forward to continuing the Spartacus saga. The still-untitled prequel is scheduled to start airing next January.

posty
Never would have happened had whitfield not been diagnosed and treated for cancer. Don't know if that is true or not... I think there was talk of a prequel before it came out that he had cancer...
Big Country
Never would have happened had whitfield not been diagnosed and treated for cancer. Possibly, but, I think with how well Lawless and Hannah played the characters, it is a possibility they make this move anyway, especially with them being killed off in the final episode. posty
http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2010/09/26/spa...itfield-cancer/ 'Spartacus' may 'close up shop' in wake of Andy Whitfield's cancer relapse Although Starz execs have yet to decide how Andy Whitfield’s cancer relapse will impact the future of Spartacus: Blood and Sand, exec producer Steven S. DeKnight reveals that one of two things will likely happen: a new actor will be brought in to replace Whitfield or the series will end. “The two main options are to close up shop or recast,” says DeKnight. “I want to talk to Andy and find out how he feels about the options. That’s obviously very important to us. “We’re still absorbing what’s happened,” adds DeKnight. “I think it’s going to be a little while before we reach any conclusions.” (Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, a prequel to the series, will still air as scheduled in January 2011.) DeKnight says his primary concern remains Whitfield, who bowed out of the show’s second season after doctors advised him to resume “aggressive treatment” for Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. “He’s a trooper,” marvels DeKnight. “He has a very positive outlook.”
