TimC
Look, we voted for a Democrat President for the first time in decades....isn't worshipping Stalin the next move down this road?

Ursa Majoris
If this is purely a D-Day memorial then including Stalin is silly since the Russians were not involved in that other than pressing for years to get a second front opened up. If it's WW2 memorial then it decidedly is not silly. The USSR under Stalin won that war in Europe almost singlehanded, fighting continuously over four times longer than the western front was open. Even without a western front, they were going to win by the time D-Day came along. Regardless of Stalin's purges, death camps and murder of millions, he was still a distant second in terms of world evil to Hitler.
Perchoutofwater
Stalin statue removed from the town square in Stalin's home town of Gori Georgia. Maybe they know more about his type of government than we do. Edited June 25, 2010 by Perchoutofwater

Didn't Stalin kill something like 20MM of his own people? Six million jews is a ton, and it's horrible, but I still don't understand why people like Stalin, Mao and Pol Pot get passes when they each killed 3X more people than Hitler. That being said, the Russians definitely did more than their share of the heavy lifting in opposition to Hitler.

You are right in that in terms of murder, Mao, then Stalin, then Hitler is the correct order. However, I was talking about world evil - factor in the total dead of the world war entirely precipitated by Hitler and you come up with a different order entirely. Stalin was a socialist kind of like Rachel Maddow.

TimC
If this is purely a D-Day memorial This D-Day memorial is beautiful. I've been there...it's only an hour and a half or so away from my house. It is in a very small town called Bedord, VA which lost more soldiers per capita than any other town. It sent 35 soldiers out of a town of under 3,500 population and lost 23 on D-Day and the days that followed. Nearly every one of the families lost or knew someone lost in a very close-knit town. It is a very solemn place and well done. It isn't run by the Government but is privately-funded. Edited June 25, 2010 by TimC
