driveby
Or maybe not McDonald's Corp. has warned federal regulators that it could drop its health insurance plan for nearly 30,000 hourly restaurant workers unless regulators waive a new requirement of the U.S. health overhaul. The move is one of the clearest indications that new rules may disrupt workers' health plans as the law ripples through the real world. driveby
Harvard Pilgrim cancels Medicare Advantage plan Harvard Pilgrim Health Care has notified customers that it will drop its Medicare Advantage health insurance program at the end of the year, forcing 22,000 senior citizens in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine to seek alternative supplemental coverage. The decision by Wellesley-based Harvard Pilgrim, the state’s second-largest health insurer, was prompted by a freeze in federal reimbursements and a new requirement that insurers offering the kind of product sold by Harvard Pilgrim — a Medicare Advantage private fee for service plan — form a contracted network of doctors who agree to participate for a negotiated amount of money. Under current rules, patients can seek care from any doctor.
driveby
McDonalds is lying A Wall Street Journal report alleging McDonald's might stop covering 30,000 workers because of the health reform law is "flat out wrong," Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said Thursday. "This is a healthcare model built around the private market," she said. "It might be the salvation of the private market."
bpwallace49
Or maybe your facts are wrong? OAK BROOK, Illinois (AP) -- The fast-food restaurant chain McDonald's Corp. has denied a report that it is considering dropping health care coverage for some employees in response to a health care reform provision. The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that McDonald's, the world's largest hamburger chain, has warned regulators it could drop its plan for some 30,000 workers unless the government waives a new requirement in the health care overhaul. The paper cited a memo from McDonald's to federal officials. McDonald's said Thursday in a statement it has been speaking with federal agencies to understand the law, but the company called reports that it planned to drop health care coverage for employees "completely false." Nope . . it must be a shadowy plot by McDonalds in opposition to the evil socialist Health care plan. Really the only way to look at it and use it to make political hay. redrumjuice
I believe someone sat in a church for twenty years, named his autobiography after one of the church's sermons, had the pastor marry him, baptize his children, be his mentor and father figure... but never once in those 20 years did said person ever listen to a sermon in that church. Even if McDonalds reverses their (public) position in this case, there are and will be plenty of others to validate my point; Obama said if you like your insurance you can keep it - that was a lie. Just because now they reverse it does not mean it was not said or that it is being discussed and decided on - do you really think MCDonalds wants that info public so the employees can freak out and start spitting in the food? I am guessing that it was a legit story at first and now McDonalds is backpedaling - this seems very plausible. Like Driveby said - it will happen with companies because this health care reform (cough cough) was/is a joke.
driveby
More hope and change (Reuters) - The U.S. healthcare reform law will worsen a shortage of physicians as millions of newly insured patients seek care, the Association of American Medical Colleges said on Thursday. The group's Center for Workforce Studies released new estimates that showed shortages would be 50 percent worse in 2015 than forecast. "While previous projections showed a baseline shortage of 39,600 doctors in 2015, current estimates bring that number closer to 63,000, with a worsening of shortages through 2025," the group said in a statement. More hope and change; "The United States already was struggling with a critical physician shortage and the problem will only be exacerbated as 32 million Americans acquire health care coverage, and an additional 36 million people enter Medicare." Medicare is the federal health insurance plan for people over the age of 65, and census projections show that group growing as the giant baby boomer generation born from 1946 to 1964 hits retirement age. The U.S. healthcare reform plan signed into law by President Barack Obama in March is designed to provide insurance to 32 million Americans who now lack it. The AAMC projected a shortage of 33,100 physicians in specialties such as cardiology, oncology and emergency medicine in 2015. It calls for Congress to increase funding to train new doctors. "The number of medical school students continues to increase, adding 7,000 graduates every year over the next decade," the AAMC said. It said at least 15 percent more were needed. Other groups, such as the nonprofit Rand Corporation and the Institute of Medicine, have also projected various physician shortages.
Ursa Majoris
More hope and change This problem is trivial to resolve. Simply extend H1B visas or whatever type is required and import the doctors, who will then earn five times what they would earn at home. Most will depart after six years or whatever it is, having set themselves up for life and a new batch will take their place.

Companies are already shipping people to India (among other nations) for surgery because it's cheaper, so the question of quality is already largely resolved. Ursa Majoris
Not in my mind it ain't. But it is in the minds of insurers, the people you most trust with your health decisions, otherwise they wouldn't do it. Perhaps they factor in any lawsuit costs and still think they'd come out ahead.
