threw in an svga-to-component video cable on my last order to monoprice, thinking it might be nice to hook the laptop up to the tv. (my tv doesn't have a vga input). but it ain't working. display driver doesn't have a lot of different settings. max res is 1200 x 800, then it has 1280 x 768, 1024 x 768 and 800 x 600. tv is up to 1080p. 720p is 1280 x 720....I'm thinking maybe it would work if I could set my display to that setting? or is this a fool's errand?

Your TV acts like a 2nd monitor so you may have to tell your laptop to display your screen there as well. Try the f4 button to cycle thru the displays. For some laptops it may be different than f4 but you should have a monitor symbol on one of the f keys showing you.

oh I know enough to get past this part.

pretty sure it's a mismatched resolutions thing, or perhaps some sort of limitation in the component/vga cable.

If your laptop won't reach a resolution over 1280x768, then I think you might have to set your TV's resolution to 720p if you can...

1280p would be like 1920x1280, so if you change it to 720, then you might be able to get one of those settings to work, like 1280x768.

If that's not the issue, I'd imagine it'd have to be an incompatible driver or something like that.

I've used hdmi plenty, video works fine but I cannot get audio to come through the cable.

There may be a setting in the TV menu for the TV to accept audio from certain sources - HDMI, coax, optical, etc. You have to be sure it is accepting audio from the correct input.
