Saints looking to improve the roster specifically at TE

Fire sales don't just happen unless contracts are structured in a way that makes it an easy move. Not sure how Bennett's contract is structured, but it would make sense.

You just can't have these mass sales like in baseball. Allen's was easy based on all his money has essentially already been paid for the year, and Bostic's salary is minimal.

Bennett's contract - he's in year 3 of a 4 year deal, not a lot of dead money but a $6M or so cap hit and annual salary around $5M

Jeffery's contract - in the final year of his rookie contract, dead cap about $500K, cap hit $1.5M, base salary $1M

Agreed.

Trades in the NFL are nowhere near as easy as many fans like to hope they are. It's not like in fantasy football where you simply have to have something that theoretically benefits both teams.

Besides that, the Saints have many more issues than just TE, lack of pass rush probably being the biggest but they're also lacking a downfield target. Cooks just doesn't have the size to be that guy, he's probably better suited playing a Cobb type role. If they were to have done something in way of actually replacing Graham it's more likely that it would have happened before the season started. If they're going out to get a player I think it's more likely for depth or a rotational player than anything. I seriously doubt it's going to carry the flash that the Allen trade did.

Jeffery could fit, but I seriously doubt the Saints could resign him.

Brees just restructured today...maybe something is up?

They converted a portion of his base salary into a signing bonus clearing $2.6M this year and increasing his cap hit in 2016 to $30M.

There was a pretty good explaination of what exactly it meant on the Saints board and how it will affect the cap numbers:

Per the salary cap carryover rule:

We push $2.6M of cap hit from this year to next. If we make a move to use the freed up money THAT is real news and has real impact. If we don't use the extra $2.6M I think we just need to declare it back as unused cap space for this year -- which would simply "carryover" into 2016 and increase our cap space for next year by the same $2.6M.

Net effect is we give ourselves $2.6M of flexibility to make a move this year if we find something we like -- but we don't HAVE to make a move and if we don't we essentially end up next year with $2.6M extra of "dead money" or "prorated bonus" on Drew, but we have $2.6M more of extra total cap space to work with so net remaining cap is exactly the same!

Basically, they create room if they need to sign someone quickly & if it's not used it turns to dead money for next season inflating our cap space.

Could they be looking at possibly adding a QB if Brees injury doesn't heal properly, or is re-injured?

Browns made a kind of strange move today, signing 3rd string QB Austin Davis to an extension through 2017. The contract is cheap, but they were interested in trading with the Rams to get him during camp, then signed him off waivers before the season started with Manziel nursing a sore elbow and #3 QB Connor Shaw injured.

Of course this story fuels the massive debate and speculation about who is or should be the Browns QB. Some even suggest this is a sign the Browns are preparing to trade Manziel, to the Cowboys according to some.

Sorry didn't mean to derail the thread, just wondering about some of these moves going on early in the season.
