Can a team release a player due to strikes against him in the substance abuse program?

I'm sure they can release him for other reasons.

I believe NFL contracts are much the same as the one you likely have at work - you can be let go at any time. Effectively, employment in the NFL is "at will", or that's what I understand, anyway.

On a side note, it's always struck me as amazing that the NFLPA hasn't gone and done the same as the NBAPA and MLBPA - guaranteed contracts.

The strike of 1987 and the replacement players. The NFLPA has been taking it in the ass ever since.

The length of an NFL career is so short, that there is almost no leverage from the players side.

I don't see why players in any sports should receive guaranteed contracts. Why should it be any different than the "real world"? They get paid a hell of a lot more than the rest of us and have better benefits packages. Not to mention the fact that NFL players get signing bonuses paid in full up front. And if their level of play is significantly higher than what they're getting paid, all they have to do is hold out and they'll get what they want (e.g., Priest, Gonzo, Portis, etc.).

I couldn't agree more. However, from the players POV, it's worth having. Wouldn't you want one, especially if you saw the firm over the road doing them?

Also, a couple of NBA coaches have begun to grumble about guaranteed contracts producing lazy players. Why work when you can lie on your back and still get paid the same?
