Why is the logo only on the right side?

Money saving move in the early years that caught on and they decided not to change it.

I found this

Pittsburgh, PA – The Pittsburgh Steelers will be getting logos on the left-side of their helmets for the very first time, beginning with their October 10th Monday night game at San Diego. A very excited Ben Roethlisberger made the big announcement while surrounded by seven of his teammates – Kimo von Oelhoffen, Willie Parker, Tommy Maddox, Troy Polamalu, Joey Porter, Travis Kirschke and Alan Faneca.

The eight teammates held a car wash fundraiser on Monday, September 26th in a parking lot outside of Heinz Field. Even though the Steelers had just suffered a tough home loss to New England the day before, spirits were reported to be high during the event. The players washed 104 cars in eight hours, raising $1,040 with which to purchase the additional logos.

Said Porter, “The guys were sick of being made fun of by players on the Ravens and Colts and Texans. Even Lions players were making fun of our one-sided logo helmets. Their barbs really hurt. Sometimes they would say, ‘Where’s your logo? Did I knock it off your helmet on that last block?` What is my comeback for that one?”

Steelers owner Dan Rooney has refused to pay for the logos numerous times, as had his father, Art Rooney, in the years that he ran the team. “This is a business,” Dan Rooney has said numerous times. “Money doesn’t grow on trees.” Rooney finally agreed to put logos on the left-side of the Steelers helmet, as long as the players raised the money to cover the additional cost. Roethlisberger & Co. decided on having a car wash, after rejecting a dunk tank and selling steroids on eBay.

“We had a great time,” said Big Ben. “If we do it again in the future, I think we should charge more for vans and SUVs, but all in all, it was fun.”

Steelers guard Alan Faneca concurred. “We all took our shirts off and playfully squirted each other with our hoses. Wait, we’re talking about the showers after the game, right?”

Kimo von Oelhoffen was able to generate two $5 tips for soaping up windows with his man-boobs. “I felt a little weird about it,” said Kimo. “Especially when one of the guys in his car started videotaping me and touching himself.”

“I immediately told coach Cowher about it, just like he told us to,” said the twelfth year defensive end.

Otherwise it would be wrong - Bada boom

I thought it was because Pitt. lineman always looked to their left when they set up to be sure they are on the correct side of the ball :D both sides would have just confused them

I thought is was because during WWII, the league didn't have enough players so they had to combine the Eagles and the Steelers into the "Steagles". And they had a Steeler logo on one side and an Eagle logo on the other side. Then when they seperated again after the war, the Steelers took off the Eagle logo but never replaced it out of respect for those who died in the war. Or something like that.

I'm sure Big John knows for sure.

I dunno if it's been mentioned or not, but I think it has something to do with the fact that all other helmets (logos) in the league look the exact same on both sides, i.e. they "flow" from front to back, whereas if the Steelers did it, it wouldn't look right. The logo would be backwards. One side the logo would face one way, the other side it would face the other way. Anyone understand that or am I just a blathering idiot?

In 1943, they were still wearing leather helmets, and there were no logos on them.

The 4 teams with letters as the logo - GB, CHI, SF, NYG do have them facing the other way on the left side.

For the Steelers logo, the circle is the major component and the 3 colors are relatively small, so it would not look too "backwards".
