Bonehand
From Mike Sando, Tacoma News Tribune: The Seahawks have informed Pro Bowl LG Steve Hutchinson that he will be their transition player. An announcement is expected soon. This means Hutchinson receives a one-year, $6.391 million offer. He can solicit offers from other teams once free agency begins. The Seahawks can keep him by matching any offers. They would receive no compensation if they declined to match. Edited: Whoops, Title should read transition, can you fix Big John? NoSupe4You
Smart move. They can match any offer and it saves them 500,000 or 600,000 on the qualifying offer.

NoSupe4You
This story at ESPN has a table with the differences in what the qualifying offer is at each postition.
bushwacked
Help me out here....Why sould you ever franchise a guy instead of transitioning a guy? Have the Hawks lost their ability to franchise anyone else unless they sign him to a deal?

Have the Hawks lost their ability to franchise anyone else unless they sign him to a deal? 1338770 I believe franchising him allows the most compensation (draft picks from the team that signed him) if you decide not to match an offer. Transitional players are allowed to speak with other teams and negotiate with them, and then you can match or not, but the compensation is less if you choose not to match the other team's offer. Bonehand
Help me out here....Why sould you ever franchise a guy instead of transitioning a guy? Have the Hawks lost their ability to franchise anyone else unless they sign him to a deal? 1338770 You would franchise a guy if you wanted to lock the player in & make sure they couldn't go anywhere else. Transition lets Hutch shop around, & if someone throws Jonathan Ogden money at him, the Hawks may be unable or unwilling to pay that much & lose him. According to the aforementioned Sando () using the transition tag instead in some way indicates a confidence that they can get a long term deal with Hutch. I'm not 100% sure, but I think Franchise & transition are 2 separate tags, and you can use both at any given time. Anyone know if this is correct? Anyone know if this is correct? 1338801 They are separate, as a transition has a lower dollar amount, but another team can sign him without a prohibitive compensition to the other team as the franchise does. The timing is more restrictive as it can be used only once when that player is under contract, but can be circumvented by writing a new contract afterward and ripping up the contract with that provision. Title fixed. Edited February 23, 2006 by Big John
Marauders11
rumors out of Philly that The Eagles are gonna go hard for Hutchinson by structuring a deal that makes it hard for Seattle to match- How can Seattle match a big front loaded number for Hutch and still sign Alexander? something has to give.... Under this scenario the Egles would let Runyun walk and slide Shawn Andrews out to tackle which is where he was drafted to play in the first place. He was guaranteed to be the Colts "highest paid player". The Bills had Jim Kelly and Thurman Thomas at the time, and could not match the offer due to the wording. Philly would have to guarantee more money than Seattle would be willing to match, but with a billionaire owner, I don't see that being a problem . . . That seems like one of their better spots on the O-line. Of course there are no tackles available in FA. I don't know if Andrews has even worked at Tackle yet. Any idea where this rumor comes from? Outshined
I hope Minnesota makes a pitch for his services. We need Oline help bad. P.A. (KFAN) said on the radio that Hutch should be the Vikings #1 priority.
bushwacked
Anyone know how many players with the transition tag have ever been signed away. The feeling in the local media is that Hutch may be the Hawks top priority (even over SA) and they would have franchised him if they thought it was necessary.
