Whither exiled wide receiver Terrell Owens, who will almost certainly be released next week by the Philadelphia Eagles, before the first $5 million installment of two bonuses totaling $7.5 million come due?

It's still a long shot, but don't rule out the Dallas Cowboys, a team whose curiosity level has risen at least a little bit in the past few weeks.

Coach Bill Parcells has always loved players who work hard and, for whatever problems Owens had off the field during his stops in San Francisco and Philadelphia, no one has ever questioned his unwavering work ethic. Even in practices, Owens goes hard every snap. As for the baggage he brings with him, well, Parcells has dealt with such situations in the past. And, let's face it, Dallas could use another difference-maker on the offensive side of the ball, and Owens still has big-play skills.

Owens is always going to affect the way a secondary game-plans, and he forces opponents to play a half-step deeper off the ball. The ancillary benefit for the Cowboys would be more running room for tailback Julius Jones, who figures to remain the offensive centerpiece for 2006.

Any pursuit of Owens by the Cowboys would raise questions about the future of wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson, and that is an interesting part of the equation. It's difficult to imagine two players with the egos that Johnson and Owens possess co-existing in the same lineup. Clearly, there would have to be some adjustments. But the trio of Johnson, Owens and veteran speedster Terry Glenn would be a formidable one. And it isn't as if Owens and Johnson are similar receivers in style, so there might actually be a more complementary dimension than people realize.

There is also this to consider: Having voided the final year of his contract, Johnson is entering the final season of his deal, and is due a $1 million roster bonus later this month and a $1.5 million base salary for 2006. He has quietly suggested to people for the second offseason in a row that he'd like an extension or adjustment that upgrades his compensation level.

With the 10-year veteran set to turn 34 at about the time training camp opens, it might be tough for the Cowboys to invest more money in him. Then again, Owens turns 33 in December and, given his inactivity in 2005, when the Eagles essentially iced him for the final two months of the season, some teams will be reluctant to pay him very much.

One thing is certain: Sometime next week, whether the Eagles somehow find a trade partner or are forced to release Owens, the veteran wide receiver is poised to embark on the next chapter of his NFL career. Chances are, it doesn't include the Cowboys, but don't write them off yet.

That's a good read. It will be interesting to see if the 'Boys take the chance on TO. As a Cowboys fan, I have a lot of mixed opinions. I know TO is a straight-up ass who disrespected the Star - twice. But the guy can play and he will for someone this season.

I guess my final analysis is I'd rather not have them sell their souls for a few more W's, but knowing Jerry, he's already starting writing the check.

The star is a symbol. TO and Keyshawn on the same team seems like a potential disaster.

Hey, paste that Dante story too ya slacker.

Raiders, Titans out of Culpepper chase?

<Mar. 11> According to ESPN.com's John Clayton, the Vikings overplayed their hand at bit Friday by putting a deadline on three of the teams they were talking to in trade conversations for Culpepper.

All three had the perception from the Vikings that one of the teams was offering a second-round pick. The Raiders dropped out and were only considering a conditional third-round choice before they got too heavy into the bidding, while Titans GM Floyd Reese officially notified the Vikings that he is no longer interested. The Dolphins remain in the mix, but likely won't go any higher than a solid third.

Vikings owner Zygi Wilf finally acknowledged on Friday that Minnesota was holding discussions with other teams. Earlier this week, the 29-year-old challenged the Vikings to trade him or release him in an e-mail sent to various media outlets.

"Daunte Culpepper stated he would like to be traded or released, and right now we're addressing the situation," Wilf told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. "That's all I can say."

Another team distancing itself from Culpepper is the Ravens. According to the Baltimore Sun, the Ravens are not in the running for the Minnesota quarterback.

Arizona, Detroit and the New York Jets have also been mentioned as potential landing spots.

I live in the Dallas area, so this has been the  issue the past few days on the local sports stations...  Everyone is saying that they don't need a receiver who has been kicked off of teams and was a trouble maker... I guess people forget where MeShawn and She came from...

How can you forget if you never knew...lot of uninformed Cowboys fans.

How can Cowboy fans be opposed to T.O.? When during the 90's we brought Deion and Haley over to win Super Bowls after they beat us the year before.

People will forget pretty fast after T.O. scores a TD or 2 for the 'boys.

As a Cowboys fan, I just want us to win...T.O. has a big mouth, but so does Keyshawn. bring him here.

Having guys like Deion come over after beating you in a Superbowl is one thing. Having a guy come in, who dumped on your team and your fans and your franchise's historic star is another. I'm a Raiders fan, and being one I've had to deal with the NFL's garbage 'people'. We take in all these loud mouth insane assylum applicants, and trust me, it ain't fun watching these guys bring your team down.
