Whether assigning them a round you have to forfeit to keep a player or having an initial contract length in years.
jgcoach
I don't think there is any specific number. Every league has their own rules and number of keepers. The important thing to look at has already been stated and that's how long a player can be kept and what you must give up to keep the player or players you want. Do you think more then one is the way to go?

CaptainHook
In my local league, we keep 8 players (1QB, 2RB, 3WR/TE, 2 floaters). We also can keep two guys that your team personally drafted as rookies. We call it the Rookie Keeper Exemption. Then we redraft the remaining players, as well as rookies right before the season starts. I have also played in leagues where you keep as few as one or two players. Sometimes leagues limit how long you can keep a guy. Sometimes you have to give up a draft pick to keep someone (usually the round you drafted the player in the year before). It all depends on your rules. Edited April 25, 2006 by CaptainHook

Then another where you can keep 3-players and you lose a round each year you keep that player until you hit two first round picks (hope that makes sense). For me personally, I would rather keep somewhere in the 3-5 range as opposed to just one player.
Duchess Jack
If you aren't going dynasty and have a 12 man league... I would suggest three with a reverse draft order because three still allow enough studs to hit the market where bad teams can turn it around... beyond 3, you might as well go dynasty

thecerwin
one player is a bad idea, because you do not get the wraparound. 1436857[/snapback] We keep up to 6 and each kept player is equal to a draft pick in a round. So if a player only kept 3 players they would miss the first three rounds but get picks in the 4th, 5th and 6th rounds. seems fair to us. Going at least to 2 keepers (1+24, 12+13) evens this out. We have up to 3 wherein you lose a pick for every player you keep

Anymore and you have a watered down draft. The draft is arguably the funnest day of the year.

We keep our players for as long as we like. We do not give up draft picks for the players we keep. We draft rookies and vets in the same draft and the order of the draft is based on the place you finished the previous year. This format seems to be more dynasty than keeper to me. You're building for the future by drafting rookies first. You have to do your homework.

Furd
I don't like keepers. 2 max and you have to forfeit your 1st round pick to keep one and your 1st and 2nd to keep two, if you're going to have them.

Sounds weird, but I love my keepers. TO was voted team captain last year but unforseen circumstances sidelined him. Luckily the team feels he deserves another shot at captain. dejianr
Wow more options and differences then I ever thought there were. I've been in Fantasy Football since 1984, the league started in 1982. We have always felt that you are just like an NFL owner. You get to keep your starting lineup, which in our case is 7 players + a defense. There are limits, QB = 1, RB Min=1 Max=3, WR Min=1 Max=3, TE Min=0 Max=1 K Min=0 Max=1, DEF Min=1 Max=2. Total not to exceed 8. We then draft reverse order of the final standings. So the guy in last place has a chance to draft 1st in each round. The guy who won draft last in each round. We've had two years where the guy in last place went to 1st place. For the most part over the years someone in the top has moved up to 1st and the guy in last place will move into the top 5 or 6. This past year the guy in 1st place won the league 2 years in a row. Thats only happened once before. Remember these stats are over 20+ years with 4 owners from the original 1982 league. We've only changed 6 owners since 1982 and 3 owners since 1986. We have 10 teams in the league and feel that is the right number. For what its worth !
