Kevin Seifert, Star Tribune Last update: October 01, 2006 – 10:23 PM ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. - The Twins' division championship has left the Vikings in an uncomfortable scheduling conflict that should be resolved today. If necessary, Game 5 of the Twins' Division Series against Oakland would be played Oct. 8 at the Metrodome. The Vikings are scheduled for a noon start against Detroit the same day, and it takes more than four hours to convert the Dome from football to baseball. A spokesman said the team would announce its contingency plan today. The most likely scenario always has been moving the Lions' game to Monday, Oct. 9. The game would be televised by ESPN, probably locally in the Twin Cities and Detroit. Still, the Vikings spent much of the past week deep in discussion with the NFL, Major League Baseball, the Twins and the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission on who has priority over Metrodome use. The Twins and the commission have maintained that baseball takes precedence, citing the Twins' user agreement with the commission. But that agreement expired in 2004, and while the Twins continue to operate under the old terms, they have no current and updated lease with the Metrodome. The Vikings' lease, according to a person with knowledge of the situation, requires them to re-schedule only in the case of the World Series. While it seems highly unlikely the Vikings will pursue a legal case in order to maintain Sunday's schedule, they might seek compensation for lost revenues and other costs associated with moving a game on short notice. The only other option would be to swap home games with the Lions, who are scheduled to play the Vikings on Dec. 10 at Ford Field. According to a source close to the discussions, the Lions rejected that possibility because it would force them to play four of their final five games on the road. Normally as a Viking fan living in AZ I would say this sucks. But in this case, I'll be up in the north country and should be able to catch it on TV still. Ursa Majoris Posted October 2, 2006 Share Posted October 2, 2006 Sounds to me like the Vikings have the upper hand and are just looking for money. Although from a football strategy standpoint, I'd rather play Sunday instead of playing Monday and getting a shortened week, especially since they won't get any national TV exporsure by switching. Minnesota is long overdue for two new stadiums. The Twins have the upper hand. They have the backing of the Metropolitan Sports Commission, they have literally nowhere else to go (neither do the Vikings) and the game MUST be played that day. Also, if the Vikings threaten the Twins playoff hopes, they will commit a colossal PR error. The Twins have their new stadium approved, the Vikings do not. Of course, you are dead right about the stadiums. In fact, it's three that are needed, one for the Gophers too (recently approved). If the cities had sparked years ago instead of penny pinching as always and having three bigtime teams crammed into one stadium, this would be a non-issue. Lake cruise schedule also conflicting? The NFL has a policy of not starting regular-season games prior to 11:30 AM local time of where the game is being played.
