want to get a pretty nice bottle for a gift

for big, i usually go with my cali cabs.... i think the other guys can offer more insight into zin (which i really enjoy), and shiraz (which i rarely order while out).

 

montelena is a nice make. i have really enjoyed caymus, stag's leap, silver oak.....

The Montelena is a great choice, but you might want to stick with what he loves or get a hard to get bottle for him (if you need help with that I can help). You may even want to get him 3 or 4 nice bottles of wine, best buys at $25 a pop. The Mollydooker Boxer Shiraz was ~ $25 and they carry a Two Left Feet blend for $25... but it would be fun to give a sampler pack.

Two Hands has had a lot of great Shiraz over the past few years and you can probably get a very nice bottle around $40 - 50 ... therefore you can get him more than one.

the sampler pack thing would be good....but whatever i get i'm gonna have to carry on a plane with me, so a single bottle is preferable.

 

 

oh wait....thanks to those f'n terrorists, you can't even carry wine on anymore, can you? :bash:

 

or have they relaxed that :D

I'd watch what you get from this winery - they've been having some problems w/ TCP and taint.

Not to put words into your mouth, but you probably mean TCA. I think it was Wine Spectator wrote an article about it and Bo Barrett, Montelena's winemaker has taken steps to reduce it at the winery to less than 1.4 parts per trillion... it was around 3 or 4... Fortunately, the 97 and 01 versions show very low levels of TCA. TCA is usually undetectible to most individuals.

I was thinking about just the wine. Then a few reps came by and I was reminded of the perfect wine for what your looking for...

 

To begin with it's not widely known which is always a nice touch when it comes to gift wine. Secondly, it's not a ballbuster style so your friend can enjoy it next week or next year. In fact, I actually asked the supplier if they had any retail exposure in CO with you in mind and they said that Wine Merchant of CO just picked up the line.

 

The winery is Juslyn. I tasted the 02 Perry's Blend (Parker 91 pts) likely about $60 retail, the Vineyard Select Cab (Parker 93) likely about $80, and the Estate Spring Mtn Cab (Parker 94) likely about $95. All of them were very elegant but profoundly extracted. They really did get better up the line, which is somewhat uncommon. I liked the Perry and will likely pick it up mostly because it fits in better with the price point of my list. However, for personal choice, I was really down with the other two. The vineyard select was pretty but still and some grip and tannin. The Estate was freaking awesome if a bit better for the long haul. None the less, any are assured to please.

 

There you go, hot off the presses from a guy who's been accused of being "yet another az on these boards".

Got my computer side of my brain crossed with my vino side. You'd be correct.

 

But I thought the Wine Spectator article specifically mentioned the '97. I would think the problem would be corrected by now, but haven't heard much more.

 

I actually had 3 bottles of the '97 - Had one in 2005 and one in 2006 - very good and no signs of taint.

 

I probably will save the last one for another year or two.

I don't have any 97s but I wasn't impressed with 97 California Cabs in general. 96, which was not considered by all to be good, was much better IMO. For example, the 96 Altamura is one of my favorite cabs of all time. I first had it at an intersting restaurant in North Carolina called the Angus Barn. Food was good but wine cellar (which I got a tour of) was beyond impressive.
