Azazello1313
Â seems to make as much sense as anywhere else he could have gone. wonder what they gave up. I also wonder if pioli is still secretly working for the pats. Â edit: schefter on tv speculating the trade probably doesn't involve the #3 pick. maybe their second rounder and a future contigent pick. Czarina
Woo. Hoo. Â I wish him all the best. Â So, aside from a bunch of cap space, what did we get? Edited February 28, 2009 by Czarina
Chief Dick
If KC maintains the 1.3 in this draft they will most definitely go with O-line.

This throws a major wrench into the draft....I love it. As a Cassel owner, I'm happy as snot. I'll now be able to command more from him via trades. Bring Back Pat!!!
Why does this make you jump for joy? Just askin'. Â Â Because the Pats just cleared 14 mill of cap space, turned a 6th round pick a few years back into, who knows what, but certainly more than that, and they still have a 1st and 2 2nds in this draft coming up? Â I love this move, and could see it coming for a while. I still think Bill floated the Brady recovery problems out there to drive the price up. There was no way they were keeping 2 QBs for $30 mill...
Czarina
Why does this make you jump for joy? Just askin'. Because the Pats had committed about $30 million in cap space to the QB position.  Trading Cassel means they believe Brady is OK, and  They'll get ANYTHING for Cassel as opposed to the other possibility of letting him walk as a UFA.  I think that's 3 pretty good reasons. HowboutthemCowboys
There was no way they were keeping 2 QBs for $30 mill... Understood. But as a fan who had to watch Brad Johnson flounder around when Romo got hurt last year, you'd better hope Brady's ready to go.
Jackass
So Thiggy's value drops as far and fast as a share of citigroup.

Gutierrez and O'Connell both looked good in pre-season last year, more then we could say about Cassell before week one last year.
HowboutthemCowboys
So Thiggy's value drops as far and fast as a share of citigroup. Yeah, I don't get it. Was Cassel really that much better than Thigpen last year?
Riffraff
Yeah, I don't get it. Was Cassel really that much better than Thigpen last year? Thigpen thrived in a non-standard offensive scheme under another coaching staff. Nobody thinks he'd do as well in a base offense. And this non-standard offense only generated a few wins. It's a goner. Edited February 28, 2009 by Riffraff
Randall
Woo. Hoo. Â I wish him all the best. Â So, aside from a bunch of cap space, what did we get? Â Â Yeah the Patriots escaped a bullet (potentially at least). Â Now if they send Randy Moss and Welker with him it could be a good trade. But as a fan who had to watch Brad Johnson flounder around when Romo got hurt last year, you'd better hope Brady's ready to go. Â they used a 3rd rounder on kevin oconnell last year with the idea that cassel was out of here anyway....if they dont feel confident that he could start a few games, or even 6(if brady somehow started the season on PUP), then they kind of wasted that pick IMO Â basically this is a very high 2nd rounder they got....and they also have two 3rd rounders....so this high 2nd rounder could easily have them moving into the first again
Czarina
I just heard that the deal isn't final yet, as there may be a 3rd team involved? Anyone else hear this?

Czarina
Mike Reiss' blog says that the paperwork is filed with the league, so the deal really is done, apparently. Still anxious to hear what the terms are.
irish
Yeah the Patriots escaped a bullet (potentially at least). Now if they send Randy Moss and Welker with him it could be a good trade.  If in fact Cassel takes the starting job from Thigpen which seems a foregone conclusion, then maybe this situation suits him just as well as the one in NE. Cassel will have Gonzo to throw to at TE and a solid WR in Dwayne Bowe. Sure that doesn't campare to Moss and Welker and Co. but didn't Cassel have the most trouble throwing the deep ball? So maybe having a shorter passing attack will suit him better?  Here's a bit of news that I read on Cassel, Thigpen and others...  http://blogs.nbcsports.com/home/  CHIEFS GOT VRABEL AND CASSEL FOR A SECOND-ROUNDER  Posted by Mike Florio: Saturday, February 28, 2009 1:56 PM  According to Peter King of SI.com, the final terms of the trade between the Chiefs and the Patriots include the movement of both quarterback Matt Cassel and linebacker Mike Vrabel in exchange for a second-round pick.  As a practical matter, then, the connection of Vrabel to the deal decreases the likelihood (in our view) of a third team crashing the party and bagging Cassel.  Meanwhile, we're hearing rumblings that the Buccaneers are the undisclosed mystery team, and that if they can't land Cassel they'll make a play for quarterback Tyler Thigpen, the incumbent starter in Kansas City. Czarina
Well, I'm a little less thrilled, knowing that KC got both players for the one pick. On the other hand, Vrabel had a relatively poor year last year and he's in the last year of his deal, so I guess he was worth the 'throw in' for value. Great deal by Pioli once again. Â I think KC will flourish with Pioli at the helm.
tazinib1
I just heard that the deal isn't final yet, as there may be a 3rd team involved? Anyone else hear this? Â I was watching NFL Network when this story broke and Adam Scheffler couldn't have appeared more annoyed at the host for keeping him on set, rather than letting him work his phone to get the breaking details lol. Pretty funny actually watching him squirm with each additional question. Â There is said to be a "surpise" mystery team involved. Still no word on said team. I don't think its the Bucs, as they were not a "surprise" team involved in a QB search. Time will tell.

Patriots
I heard its Vrabrel and Cassel for the 2nd rounder - #34. Makes no sense to me. There has to be more involved here. Unless the pats really didn't think Cassel had much value. Â ???
