Dr. Love
I can't believe the lack of love for Contact. Probably the best true sci fi movie to come out in a long time. I also like some of the more recent "original" movies, ones that are different than the norm. Matrix, Independence Day, and most especially Stargate fall into that category for me. Others have mentioned Aliens, Predator, and the like, and I like those, too. If one can consider superhero movies to be sci fi, I really, really enjoyed the X-Men movies. Very well made, didn't rely on special effects to carry the story. Oh, and props to whoever brought up Enemy Mine. When I saw this topic, the first thing I thought of was, "Man, I vaguely remember a movie about a dude and an alien trapped on an asteroid or something and they talked about the alien's holy book." Independence Day 943013 C'mon, you deep six any cred with mention of that flick. I won't rip anyone for enjoying the cinematic equivalent of junk food, but as far as being "original," ID comes up way short of being anything but LCD cliche-ridden bombast

Ursa Majoris
David Lynch's Eraserhead 943210 Ah, first mention of Eraserhead. Perhaps not a sci-fi movie so much as a horror movie. Whichever, it's totally different.

It was billed as a sci-fi movie and turned out to be 60% comedy and a bad one at that.

As an aside, I've always felt "Damnation Alley" would have been a b1tchen name for a hair-metal band.

Chavez
Slight aside - my wife was watching the craptastical I, Robot (which disgusts me on several levels, but I won't go into that now) and I started grumbling. She gets on me that "you haven't even watched it"; I told her I don't need to take a bite of the sh*t sandwich to know it tastes bad. So I then asked her "Well, is it grrrrrreat?"; she promptly told me to f-off. Never defended the merits of the film, though, so I assume I was correct.
