cliaz
The Space Elevator Comes Closer to Reality 1294030 No way that ever works. In order to maintain orbit an object has to reach speeds of 17,000 mph, the elevator would be stationary and therefore would be as fast as the earth rotates, 1000 mph. Therefore any object taken to the top of it would re-enter the earth atmosphere within mintues. Only the bottom of the elevator would be traveling at 1000 mph. The further away it gets, the faster the top travels.

ts
"For a space elevator to function, a cable with one end attached to the Earth's surface stretches upwards, reaching beyond geosynchronous orbit, at 21,700 miles (35,000-kilometer altitude)." So...if you are in the space elevator, going "up" a total of 21,700 miles how long do you have to listen to the elevator muzak?

Furd
depends on the speed of the elevator. 1294166 well, is it an African or European elevator?

McNasty
Can you imagine being stuck on that elevator with a good looking woman and really having to fart? That'd be one long ride.
