As stated above, Fanball says Grimm is the top choice.

01/17 11:24 Lions: Haslett hasn't heard from Millen

THE NEWS

Despite rumors that the Lions intended to schedule a second interview with former Saints head coach Jim Haslett regarding their own head coaching position, Haslett's agent claims he has not heard back from general manager Matt Millen. "We have nothing to report," agent Peter Schaffer is quoted as saying in Tuesday's Detroit Free Press. "I have no comment."

Our View

Millen will interview Buccaneers defensive line coach Rod Marinelli for a second time later this week. Steelers offensive line coach Russ Grimm is rumored to be the leading candidate, but league rules prohibit the Lions from contacting him until the Steelers finish their playoff run.

Millen.  Now that's the one word that will instill confidence in that organization.  :D

You know what's funny is Haslett was supposedly the leader a couple of weeks ago, then it was definitely Millen's boy Grimm. Yesterday, Chris Mortenson came on a local radio show and proclaimed Marinelli was probably going to get the gig. Today, Clayton says Haslett will be hired. :D

We're running quite an organization here...

Personally, I think a lot of the sports media is pulling stuff out of their ass for a story. I swear, after the janitor was overheard talking about how he liked The Brothers Grimm, then the new favorite became Russ Grimm. Then someone overhears an equipment guy say, "cialis has let me down" and now Haslet is the favorite. I'm not believing anything until Lions have a press conference about it.

COACHING RUMOR MILL

Highlights of the current buzz around the NFL concerning the head coaching vacancies and how it affects the Detroit Lions and their search for a new head coach:

While Lions president Matt Millen remains silent, it appears he has whittled his choices down to two candidates: former New Orleans Saints head coach Jim Haslett and Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive line/assistant head coach Rod Marinelli.

Marinelli had his second interview with the Lions on Tuesday night and Haslett is expected to interview again soon, probably today. It's still possible the Lions could summon other candidates for a second interview, but none have been scheduled. In fact, at least one candidate -- San Francisco 49ers linebacker/assistant coach Mike Singletary--- was informed on Tuesday that he was no longer in the running for the Lions job.

If Haslett and Marinelli remain the only finalists, a decision could be made within a day or two. Sources close to the situation believe the race is close, but Haslett could have an advantage because he has six years of head coaching experience while Marinelli has none.

"At this point in the process, we are still not going to confirm or deny any reports regarding our head coaching position," said Lions senior vice president of communications Bill Keenist.

In addition to Haslett, Marinelli and Singletary, the Lions had initial interviews with Pittsburgh Steelers offensive line/assistant head coach Russ Grimm, Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Maurice Carthon, Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak, New York Giants defensive coordinator Tim Lewis, Lions interim coach Dick Jauron and Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Al Saunders.

You know, I'm going to stay loyal meaning I'm not going to trash anyone for the way they are hiring this time.

The last two times they rushed their hire and everyone thought Mooch was the right fit.

Now Millen is taking his time and interviewing many candidates. No maybe there isn't the high profile person out there this year (ie Parcells) but at least he's doing his due diligence.

I think Haslett is a decent choice and Grimm would be more of a gamble.

I believe Haslett or maybe even Grimm would get more out of the talent that's in Detroit.

Just my two cents.
