Fire Escape Ladders

I've been thinking about getting some kind of fire escape system for my upper level. Both the master bedroom and my son's bedroom would have no means of escape without jumping for it. The one's they sell at Home Depot look pretty cheap, and I don't think I'd trust my life to them.

Anybody here have any kind of upper level escape system? If so, please share about the use and quality of it.

Here's a link to the site I was looking at.

I dont currently have anything in place so I cant help too much. When I was a kid my old man tied a rope to my bedpost and told me to throw it out the window if I needed to. The other thing he gave me was a baseball bat to break the window. Not sure about the rope, but I would recommend the bat. Breaking windows hurts.

I have a metal unfoldable ladder , it has a case that hangs under the window for the 3rd floor room in my house.

I'd go with the rung (chain or rope) that you throw out the window.

Intruders can't use it as a means of entry.

I do like the baseball bat idea too.

I have the chain one. My sis in law bought it for us about 7 years ago. I guess it's very thankful we haven't used it yet. Looks pretty easy though although my two bedroom windows lead out to another roof that is over the front room.

It's a fear of mine so I'm glad I have it. My boys are on the main floor and that is worrysome in and of itself. I'm kind of obsessive about it though.

Oh well.

Just a follow up on the bat idea. I know you can just open the window in most cases. But sometimes the heat of the fire, depending on how bad it is, can melt the plastic or swell the wood, making it unopenalbe. Is that a word? :D Anyway, you get my point.
