Lawyer accused of lewdness at bus stop faces possible loss of license

Monday, June 18, 2007

The politically connected lawyer allegedly seen masturbating in the nude at a Flemington bus stop faces a precarious political and legal future, officials said yesterday.

If convicted of a crime, Jake Thrun could lose his license to practice law in New Jersey, state bar association officials said. If he is not convicted, he still could face disciplinary proceedings with the New Jersey Supreme Court.

Shocked friends and colleagues called the arrest unthinkable for the man who chaired his local planning board and logged hours at a community food bank.

The lewdness and disorderly conduct charges against Jake Thrun -- a 29-year-old Hunterdon County lawyer who has held a variety of state posts, including an unpaid stint on Gov. Jon Corzine's transition team -- will be reviewed by the Hunterdon County Prosecutor's Office, a spokesman said.

The office will determine whether additional charges are warranted and whether the matter will be presented to a grand jury or heard in municipal court, the spokesman, Detective Sgt. Daniel Hurley, said yesterday.

In Hunterdon County, where Thrun had become a familiar face in local political circles, Democratic leaders were weighing the possibility of severing ties with him.

"People are innocent until proven guilty, but you have to take a line against behavior that's just not acceptable," said county Democratic Chairman David DelVecchio, who also is the mayor of Lambertville. "I'm just stunned."

It was a familiar refrain among his associates yesterday, as word spread that their diligent, married colleague had been spotted near a leafy, brick-paved outlet mall Friday afternoon wearing nothing but glasses, dark socks and a hands-free headset.

He allegedly stood in front of a parked van with two women in the front seat, masturbating for 30 to 45 seconds before climbing into his own van and driving away from the Liberty Village Premium Outlets, one of the women said.

The alleged witness, Gretchen Furlong of Raritan, said she jotted down his license plate number and later picked him out of a police lineup.

Thrun was arrested and then released on his own recognizance, police said.

It did not initially appear drugs or alcohol were a factor in the arrest, Hurley said yesterday.

Thrun, who is married to an employee of the state Treasury Department and does not have children, did not return a phone message seeking comment yesterday. No one answered the door at the Delaware Township home he shares with his wife, Virginia.

A former assistant counsel to the state Senate and counsel in the state Department of Environmental Protection, he is now employed by the Alman Group, a management and consulting firm in Westfield.

John Mango, the firm's vice president and chief financial officer, said he had not heard about the incident and declined to comment yesterday.

Others struggled to reconcile the charges with the devoted husband and volunteer they knew.

"It's so completely out of character that there's no words at the moment," said Kristin McCarthy, the Delaware Township mayor and a close family friend. "He is always one who has been there for me to call up, ask advice, give opinions, talk about bigger issues. We know him both socially and personally, and always found him to be honest and beyond reproach."

In the five or six years she has known him, McCarthy said, "never in that time have I ever doubted his honesty, nor ever saw any sign of anything that would lead me to believe he'd do something like this."

Still, she said, if the allegations are true, "there's no excuse for it."

The township committee will meet, discuss its options and ask for Thrun‘s input before deciding whether to ask for his resignation from the planning board, which he now chairs, the mayor said.

Hunterdon County Democrats are reviewing with legal counsel whether to ask for his resignation from their executive committee or take other action, DelVecchio said.

The disciplinary arm of the state Supreme Court would have jurisdiction in any proceedings regarding Doeinck law license, which could take place regardless of whether Thrun is eventually convicted of a crime, said Harold Rubenstein, the executive director of the New Jersey State Bar Association.

"It would depend on the type of crime you were convicted of and the degree of the crime," said Alan Gould, a member of the state bar association's professional and ethics advisory committees. "But you would certainly lose your license if you were convicted of this type of crime, in my opinion."

Spokesmen for Corzine did not return calls seeking comment yesterday
