darin3
I usually use Google Maps, but it oftentimes sucks for finding businesses in a certain area. For instance, I'm headed over to a hardware store here in Austin, and figured I'd grab some lunch while I'm in the area. I am zoomed in on the immediate area of the hardware store, and typed in "restaurants". It zooms out and shows me ONE restaurant, about 15 miles away. I've used Yahoo Maps in the past, and it's been OK. However, I just browsed over there, and the site is all f'ed up. I've used Mapquest in the past, and it has also been OK. Went there after Yahoo, and it wouldn't map anything without a ZIP code. Are there alternatives that y'all use that actually WORK?
BiggieFries
You could try maps.live.com.
CaP'N GRuNGe
try type in something more generic, like "food" and see what you get
darin3
You could try maps.live.com. Looks like it's OK, but is doing many of the same things these other sites do. try type in something more generic, like "food" and see what you get It zoomed out even MORE and showed me about a billion restaurants. I update every other year. Reasonable price and you could use it as a GPS (optional HW) on your laptop. Just used it the other day to find a half way point restaurant to meet up w/ some friends for dinner. Drew a circle w/ a radius of half the mileage, clicked on the northern most edge of the circle, picked find restaurants and found a great place. They used to have a 30 day $$ back guarantee. BiggieFries
Why don't you call the hardware store and ask what's around there?
Ursa Majoris
I've used Mapquest in the past, and it has also been OK. Went there after Yahoo, and it wouldn't map anything without a ZIP code. I used Mapquest about two hours ago to find an office building in downtown Minny and it didn't need a zip code. I've found Google can be horribly out of date, FWIW. AtomicCEO
Google maps is by far the best. Flawed in some ways... but way better than the alternatives.

driveby
When I'm bored I fire up Google street view in Detroit and randomly drop in and "drive around". Seems like no matter where I start, it doesn't take long to find blocks and blocks of empty lots, abandoned buildings, and run-down houses. Very depressing.
