SEC=UGA
A group of Democratic state lawmakers is calling on the federal government to make the birthday of the late Cesar Chavez a national holiday. Chavez, born March 31, 1927, was a Mexican-American farmworker, labor leader and civil rights activist who, with Dolores Huerta, co-founded the National Farm Workers Association. That group later became the United Farm Workers. Chavez died in 1993 and is considered a major figure in the Hispanic history of the nation. State Sen. Nan Orrock (D-Atlanta) and Rep. Pedro Marin (D-Duluth) have introduced resolutions in both chambers of the Legislature calling on lawmakers to support the idea of a federal holiday for Chavez. Eight states already have holidays honoring Chavez, whose work led to numerous improvements for farm laborers. “We need to honor his life,” said state Sen. Vincent Fort (D-Atlanta). “Like Dr. [Martin Luther] King he was one of the towering figures of the last 60 years in this nation. And we are becoming a blacker and browner state and nation.” Jerry Gonzalez, executive director for the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials, said he thinks Chavez’s birthday could become a federal holiday within a decade. He pointed out that President Barack Obama endorsed the idea during his run for the White House. “It’s very important that we recognize the great American heroes we have had,” Gonzalez said. “We have recognized Dr. King with a holiday, and now it’s important that we honor his colleague who was doing great work at the same time." byron2112
Forget that. If we're going to create a holiday based on a Hispanic everyone can appreciate, I say Tom Flores. Now there's a real American hero that's accomplished what only very few others ever have.
Double Agent
There was an uproar over naming a street after Chavez in Dallas a while back. Rule of thumb, if a street is named after MLK or Chavez...don't drive down it.

Yeah, my hometown honored Dr. King by naming the avenue running through the heart of the most crime ridden area in the city after him. I think the politicians thought it would be inspirational or something.
SEC=UGA
"And we are becoming a blacker and browner state and nation.” This is the part I particularly liked... That is sound logic right there. Next thing you know we'll have cinco de mayo celebrations all over the place... or God forbid, St. Patty's day celebrations... When i was in Grad school, I'd take a road down through an area call Sweet Auburn to get to the Highway. I about got carjacked right in front of bust of MLK. As I reflected upon it, it seemed quite inappropriate for those two individuals to attempt such an ianappropriate act right in fron of a memorial of MLK. He probaly wasn't too happy with that. Perchoutofwater
I think most holidays should be abolished with the exception of New Years Day, Easter, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Get rid of MLK day, presidents day, etc.. Edited March 31, 2010 by Perchoutofwater

Perchoutofwater
Easter isn't a holiday. Oh.....aren't you missing one in July also? We celebrate Easter at my house, and it is one of the few days I have never gone into the office on. Due to the ever increasing yoke of oppressive taxation required to fund the redistributive programs championed by socialist like yourself and the Obamassiah we can no longer celebrated independence as you and Obama want everyone to be dependent on the government and the ever decreasing pool of people who's property and time is confiscated. When I first moved to Altanta in the mid 90's I loved driving everywhere, getting lost, seeing all the sights. I noticed on a map that South Cobb Drive just keeps going and going, right into the perimeter and then out again. Cool, I thought, a new part of the city to check out. The first couple of miles past 285 were uneventful, but then it all changed very quickly. I'm not one to get overly spooked by a bad area, but I've never been more scared in my entire life. People were doing double-takes like "what are YOU doing here?", then I was approached by about 6 dudes standing outside a Church's Chicken. They seemed genuinely offended by my presence. I ran a red light and got the hell out of there. It was like another country, seriously. On a related subject, I have a great shortcut in and out of Lakewood/Hi Fi Buys, PM for details. darin3
is that the boxer or the dog trainer guy? My wife always mixes those dudes up. And FWIW, there's a Caesar Chavez street here in Austin, and half of it is "fine" and the other half is kinda-barrio-but-kinda-becoming-gentrified. We have an MLK too and it's also half n' half.
