Chief Dick
My Garmin is from 2007. Do I really need to update my maps? Not sure I really want to update for $50. What say you?
Square
Never have and probably never will. I think the last time I looked at an update it was $70 and I figure I can find a new one for around $100 or $125 at most so I don't really feel like updating a map and hoping it has something new that I need on old hardware. Kid Cid
It's $60 for a one time update and twice that for unlimited updates. I guess it depends on where you live and how you drive. The roads around here change so frequently and traffic is so bad that you need to keep them updated so you can plan workarounds to the mess. Duchess Jack
the last time I went to update, it was free - but there was this warning that said downloading the wrong upgrade could destroy the unit. I thought it was the right upgrade, but there was nothing that said 100% that it was. With that said, we've yet to upgrade.

It was ~$95. A couple of roads and housing areas changed so I figured why not. I have a higher end model so I hope to have this thing for several more years. millerx
take a right at the road past where the old red barn use to be but before you get to the really big tree.
Ursa Majoris
Updated mine for $65 and would not do it again. The download is gigantic, failed six times before it finally worked. I'd rather buy a new one.
Riffraff
I bought the 2010 upgrade (with Mexico and Canada) via SD card. Plug and play. Works well and no worries about upgrading errors. Not all models have the SD slot though. Edited November 24, 2010 by Riffraff

frankf
Don't some of the newer models come with free lifetime updates? If so you might be better off just purchasing a new one as to updating an old one.
