Chief Dick
There's not another song that gives me the chills like the Star Spangled Banner. I damn near cry every time I hear that song. You must have seen the same article I read today.
Ursa Majoris
There's not another song that gives me the chills like the Star Spangled Banner. I damn near cry every time I hear that song. Stars And Stripes Forever Let martial note in triumph floatAnd liberty extend its mighty hand A flag appears 'mid thunderous cheers, The banner of the Western land. The emblem of the brave and true Its folds protect no tyrant crew; The red and white and starry blue Is freedom's shield and hope. Other nations may deem their flags the best And cheer them with fervid elation But the flag of the North and South and West Is the flag of flags, the flag of Freedom's nation. Hurrah for the flag of the free! May it wave as our standard forever, The gem of the land and the sea, The banner of the right. Let despots remember the day When our fathers with mighty endeavor Proclaimed as they marched to the fray That by their might and by their right It waves forever. Let eagle shriek from lofty peak The never-ending watchword of our land; Let summer breeze waft through the trees The echo of the chorus grand. Sing out for liberty and light, Sing out for freedom and the right. Sing out for Union and its might, O patriotic sons. Other nations may deem their flags the best And cheer them with fervid elation, But the flag of the North and South and West Is the flag of flags, the flag of Freedom's nation. Hurrah for the flag of the free. May it wave as our standard forever The gem of the land and the sea, The banner of the right. Let despots remember the day When our fathers with might endeavor Proclaimed as they marched to the fray, That by their might and by their right It waves forever. DMD
While the song is hard to sing for most, I still prefer the SSB over any other alternatives. Instead of a song about how pretty the country is or how patriotic we should be, the message of the SSB is a good one IMO. It's about a country that can withstand the literal and figurative barrage when the night sky is lit up and filled with smoke and yet that flag is still there. Throughout the night and into the dawn, the flag continued to wave because good and brave men would not give in. They ensured that the symbol of that hard-won freedom would "yet wave" over the land of the free and (because this was and is) the home of the brave. I'm decidedly old school. That song reminds us what we were so lucky to inherit and entrusts us to keep our freedoms that were handed to us. The flag is the symbol of all of that to me. So yeah, not cool with flag burning and really do not give a Ginsu what their reason is. And there is no way, bringing up an old thread, that anyone wearing a flag to school could possibly be disruptive. Like they say, stand up for something or else you'll fall for anything. Like the motto says - e pluribus unum (out of many, one). The flag is the symbol of all those before and now that give me this life.

rocknrobn26
Good post Doc. #1 is #1. It's the only one that brings a tear to my eye and a feeling of pride to my heart. ETA: Great post David. You nailed it and agree w/ all you said. Call me a flag waver, I don't care, but those stars and stripes and the song just gives me chills. But what does SPB mean? Shouldn't it be SSB? I also notice the "filter" works for you also. Edited July 4, 2011 by rocknrobn26
SheikYerbuti
I've been advocating for years that the National Anthem should be "Let's Get It On" by Marvin Gaye.

billay
is, far and away, the best version of the National Anthem I have ever heard. It should always be sung a capella.
