CaptainHook
It looks as if the Colts have re-signed Robert Mathis to a long-term contract. No details as of yet.

Shorttynaz
A little surprised, but certainly glad they're keeping him!
CaptainHook
I think the fact he can be flexible in the 3-4 or 4-3 was the reason he was re-signed.
CaptainHook
The reconstruction project under way at the Indianapolis Colts' West 56th Street complex will include one of their defensive cornerstones. Robert Mathis, one of the NFL's most disruptive pass-rush ends, on Monday agreed to a four-year, $36-million contract. "Still Bleedin Blue!!! #YaDigg,' " Mathis wrote on his Twitter account. He could not be reached for comment. Even though the team is expected to transition from its traditional 4-3 alignment to a 3-4 under first-year coach Chuck Pagano, Mathis' versatility and energy were deemed too valuable to discard. The Colts backed up their commitment to Mathis, 31, with a hefty investment. It's believed the deal is the largest in league history for a defensive end/outside linebacker who's at least 31. It includes a $15 million signing bonus, guarantees Mathis $17 million in the first year and pays him $24 million over the first two years. The team had to exercise the franchise tag on Mathis when contract negotiations could not be completed by Monday's 4 p.m. deadline. Once details were finished, the one-year, $10.6 million tag was lifted. However, the need to tag Mathis meant the Colts could not use it on Pierre Garcon when they were unable to reach a long-term deal with their veteran receiver Monday. Discussions can continue, but if a contract isn't reached with Garcon, he becomes an unrestricted free agent and able to sign with any team starting March 13. Garcon's uncertainty aside, Pagano has made it clear he wants Mathis part of his defense moving forward. During the recent NFL Scouting Combine, he described Mathis and fellow end Dwight Freeney as "game-wreckers." Freeney (102.5) and Mathis (83.5) rank 1-2 in club history in sacks. Since they became a tandem in 2003, they rank 1-2 in the league in forced fumbles. "We're going to make sure that we put both of those guys in position to make plays," Pagano said, dispelling any uncertainty involving Mathis' future with the team. Neither Pagano nor general manager Ryan Grigson was available for comment on Mathis' signing. Mathis is one of the NFL's top draft "finds" over the past decade. Unheralded and undersized coming out of Alabama A&M in 2003, the 6-2, 245-pounder was selected by the Colts in the fifth round with the 138th overall pick. Mathis has led the Colts in sacks in six of the past seven seasons -- he had a team-high 91/2 in 2011 -- and been selected to the Pro Bowl in each of the past four seasons. He didn't participate in the most recent Pro Bowl, choosing instead to spend time with his infant twins. Monday's deal is the second significant payday for Mathis. Prior to 2006, he signed a six-year, $30 million contract. His rookie deal in '03: three years, $1.037 million. http://www.indystar.com/article/20120306/SPORTS03/203060310/4-years-36-million-Colts-Robert-Mathis-strikes-rich?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|IndyStar.com
