Puddy
Onterrio Smith suspended for the season By JON KRAWCZYNSKI, AP Sports Writer June 7, 2005 EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. – Troubled Minnesota Vikings running back Onterrio Smith has been suspended by the NFL for the entire 2005 season for violating the league's substance abuse policy. The announcement had been expected for several weeks, ever since Vikings head coach Mike Tice suspended Smith indefinitely following an embarrassing run-in at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. Smith was stopped April 21 at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport after his bag set off a screening device. A search found several vials of dried urine and "The Original Whizzinator," which is marketed as a way to beat drug tests. Smith told police the gear was for his cousin. He wasn't charged by police, and the NFL has said possession of the device alone isn't enough to violate league drug policies. The NFL's did not give a specific reason for Smith's suspension. Smith's attorney, David Cornwell, did not immediately return a telephone call from The Associated Press on Tuesday afternoon. Smith had been expected to battle for the starting running back job with Michael Bennett and Mewelde Moore after leading the team in rushing in 2004. Smith missed four games last season for violating the league's drug policy, and had two strikes against him before the latest violation. The third strike in the program comes with an automatic one-year suspension.
Perchoutofwater
I figured as much. I heard Tice in an interview during one of the Arena games this past weekend, talking about his RB's, and he never mentioned Smith, but mentioned everyone else. I wouldn't be suprised if Smith get dropped, though I think he is still a decent RB, and could be a starter on a number of teams.

geeteebee
So did anybody ever ask his cousin why he needed O to bring him the Whizzinator? Is cousin an athlete or just some fork lift operator that was afraid he'd be thrown out of the local union if he got caught with some traces of ganja in his pee. JoJoTheWebToedBoy
This was almost as funny as Stoudamire (Basketball Player) trying to get thru the metal detector in Tucson Airport with his Josh Gordon wrapped up in tin foil Edited June 8, 2005 by JoJoTheWebToedBoy

BigTen
Is there any chance of O attempting to appeal this suspension? 834073[/snapback] He was suspended for not showing up for a drug test which is an automatic failure. Because he is a repeat offender he gets suspended for the year. You sound like you think he should appeal.

I think he deserves the suspension.
MikesVikes
Tice was quoted in the paper about how he didn't want to give up on Smith because of this. Basically he was saying that you wouldn't give up on your children if they did something like this and he described Smith as his child. He also said that he is concerned about his RB depth and will be on the prowl for another established back for this year.
