Walter Payton's museum robbed

Tribune staff reports

Published March 28, 2006, 6:52 PM CST

It wasn't the real deal but it was still worth $3,500. A replica of Walter Payton's Chicago Bears Super Bowl XX championship ring was stolen Monday from a museum dedicated to the football great in Aurora, police said.

Between 3 and 10 p.m., someone smashed the glass case at the Walter Payton Museum at 200 block of North Broadway Avenue and stole the ring and possibly other items belonging to the museum, said Aurora police spokesman Dan Ferrelli on Tuesday.

The case the robber broke into was worth an additional $1,500, Ferrelli said.

Payton bought the replica to replace his original ring, which had been lost for about six years after he lent it to a Hoffman Estates High School basketball player in 1996. The ring was recovered in 2001 from the couch of a Purdue University student in West Lafayette, Ind.

The original is now in the possession of Payton's family, according to the museum's Web site.

It's the first theft of Payton's memorabilia since the museum and an attached restaurant opened in 1996, according to the Web site.

There are no cameras in the museum, and no tickets are given to patrons, said Ferrelli. But there is a guest book that patrons can sign, he said.

"Certainly, it was a brazen incident," Ferrelli said.

Anyone with information is being asked to call Aurora police at 630-801-6655.

The museum is part of "Walter Payton's Roundhouse" which is a restaurant/brewery/bar/hall type thing.  Very cool place.  I got married there a few years ago.

It is a very nice place. Do you mean that you had your reception at the Roundhouse or did you actually recite your vows there?

Payton's rings recovered

Tribune staff reports

Walter Payton's stolen Hall of Fame ring and replica Super Bowl ring have been recovered from a pawn shop, Aurora police said.

The rings were taken Monday from the museum at Walter Payton's America's Brew Pub in the western suburb.

Two men pawned the rings for $150 at a pawn shop on Chicago's West Side, police said. Suspicious store employees contacted Aurora police Tuesday night, and investigators recovered the rings last night.

The pawn shop employees are cooperating with police. No one was in custody as of this morning, but police said they are pursuing leads on the men's whereabouts.

Anyone with information was asked to call Aurora police detectives at 630-801-6655 or Aurora Area Crime Stoppers at 630-892-1000.

The incident began when someone smashed a glass display case in the museum at the Payton restaurant between 3 and 10 p.m. Monday and took the rings. The loss was estimated at $5,000 for the replica ring and the case. A value for the Hall of Fame ring wasn't disclosed.

The legendary Bears running back played 13 seasons for the Bears and set National Football League records for ball carrying and rushing. He died Nov. 1, 1999, at the age of 45 of complications from primary sclerosing cholangitis, a rare liver disease.

Payton had bought the replica to replace the original ring–a memento of the Bears' 1986 Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots.

The original was lost after Payton lent it to a Hoffman Estates High School basketball player in 1996 but was recovered in 2001 from the couch of a Purdue University student in West Lafayette, Ind. It is now in the Payton family's possession.

Tribune staff reporter Angela Rozas contributed to this story.

Actually both. Our pastor came to the roundhouse and we had the ceremony in the courtyard. It was great because after the ceremony, everyone just walked to the reception hall for drinks. After the reception, there was a band playing in the courtyard that night as well. The whole thing turned out better than we thought it would. I mean, we knew it's be great, but everything was perfect...except it was about 100 degrees outside and i was sweating my balls off.
