On Shockey and Colston

Finally, some good news on the injury front. Receiver Marques Colston and tight end Jeremy Shockey were both back in practice on a limited basis. They should still be considered questionable for Sunday's game against Oakland, but Coach Sean Payton said he was more optimistic than earlier in the week.

"I was pleased with what I saw today, and I saw more than I expected to see," Payton said. "Both of them actually took reps and moved around pretty good. You know, we'll see tomorrow how they feel, especially when it comes to Jeremy. But Marques looked good."

Both players did look pretty fluid during the individual drills that were open to the media. Colston was catching balls with only a small amount of padding on his surgically-repaired thumb. If he feels comfortable catching the ball, he should definitely be able to go, unless trainers are worried about a setback.

Shockey had sports hernia surgery two weeks ago, so the Saints will have to gauge how fast he recovers from the increased workload in practice.

On replacing Gramatica with Mehlhaff

Payton said the decision to replace kicker Martin Gramatica with rookie Taylor Mehlhaff was "twofold." He explained that Gramatica was dealing with pain in his groin area, which might be related to his history of sports hernias, so the team decided to place him on injured reserve. But he also said the team wants to get better production at the position, and Mehlhaff is someone the Saints trust after watching him throughout the offseason and training camp.

When asked if he'll trust Mehlhaff in a tough situation in his first NFL game, Payton said that's a "fair question."

"Obviously anytime you're starting a rookie in his first game, much like we were Carl (Nicks) a few weeks ago in his first game, you take that into account," Payton said. "We'll have a yard line that we're comfortable with going into the game and we'll apply it. And if we're at that yard line, then we're kicking in, and if we're not, then we're punting it or going for it. But I think he's a confident young player that's played in big arenas before at Wisconsin, and I think he'll handle it just fine."

IMO mnd games. Don't think they will even hit the field, if they do it will probably be decoy. They will work them out in practice, get the timing and legs ready and shoot for week 7 or 8. No way they rush them back after 2 days of practice.

I need you Marques for the playoff run. Don't come back til you're ready.

Same here. Right now I am 4-1, should be 5-1 after this week, they guy doesn't have much of a chance because he's playing Jamarcus Russell at QB and his other horses have byes are are injured.

Any word on Thursday's practice for Colston and Shockey?

New Orleans Saints wide receiver Marques Colston practiced on a limited basis for the second straight day Thursday after missing the last four games with a torn ligament in his left thumb.

Colston, who underwent surgery on Sept. 9 to repair the ligament, had the cast removed last Friday. He caught passes from quarterback Drew Brees for the first time since the season opener Wednesday with a splint on the thumb and worked again Thursday, an encouraging sign for coach Sean Payton.

That came one day after Payton said he was optimistic Colston, who originally targeted a return to the lineup later this month, could play in Sunday’s game with the Oakland Raiders in the Superdome.

On the other side, tight end Jeremy Shockey did not work Thursday. Payton said they wanted to rest him Thursday after he returned to the practice field Wednesday for the first time since having sports hernia surgery on Sept. 23.

“We saw Marques practice today, so in his case, again I was encouraged,” Payton said. “With Jeremy, I’ll just have to see where he’s at (today) and see how on the second day after his first day of practice yesterday, see how he feels. With Marques, he was out there again and we were able to see him moving around and functioning — and he did pretty well.”

Payton said he doesn’t know that there’s a risk factor in letting Colston play Sunday considering the equipment he’ll wear to protect the thumb.

“I don’t know that there is any,” Payton said about the risk. “There’s a splint that he’ll wear that prohibits any negative movement. The cast is off, and it’s just getting comfortable with the speed of the game and the flexibility with his thumb and his hand.”

Besides Shockey, five other players did not participate in Thursday’s practice. They were DT Sedrick Ellis (knee), FS Kevin Kaesviharn (back), WR David Patten, DT Antwan Lake (groin) and CB Aaron Glenn (ankle).

Ellis, who had his right knee scoped last Friday, will miss his second straight game against the Raiders.

Limited Thursday were Colston, CB Mike McKenzie (knee), T Jon Stinchcomb (back) and C Jonathan Goodwin (hamstring).

Shockey and Colston both practice

PA SportsTicker

Published: Friday, October 10, 2008

New Orleans Saints' tight end Jeremy Shockey and receiver Marques Colston both practiced Thursday on a limited basis and could be ready to play this Sunday against the Oakland Raiders.

"I'm more optimistic. I was pleased with what I saw today and I saw more than I expected to see," New Orleans coach Sean Payton said. "Both of them actually took reps and moved around well.

"We'll see tomorrow how they feel, especially when it comes to Jeremy. But Marques looked good."

Colston has been sidelined since the season opener with a thumb injury, while Shockey is recovering from sports hernia surgery.

The Saints have struggled without Colston, losing three of their previous four contests since losing their No. 1 receiver.

New Orleans' No. 2 wideout, David Patten, missed Thursday's practice.

Like Shockey, Patten has been sidelined the last two games.

I traded for him last night and now own him in all 3 of my leagues. I'd prefer he just sits this one out and comes back next week fully healthy. He'll just make my lineup decision tougher - if you find out he's starting, can you start him if he's only out there on passing downs? Tough to bench him, but tough to start him too.
