Farro

Man, I just love this stuff. Farro is a grain, sort of like a primitive wheat that was popular around the Mediterranean in ancient times that was later replaced by other grains because Farro is harder to harvest and yields less than traditional wheat. But I just love this stuff. I cook it in a pot of 2.5:1 Chicken stock to Farro for about 30 minutes or so. Kinda chewy, kinda nutty. Great on salads, a replacement for rice in risotto, etc.. I eat it almost every day. I buy it in 5 pound bags for around $40 or $50 so it is not cheap. It is imported from Italy.

Has anyone tried it? I like to cut up whatever kind of meat I have on hand and mix it with Farro for a hash-like equivalent.

It is also really good with parmesan cheese, fried up with marinara and eggs.

I feel so much better now that I have admitted this.

Farro.

Superfood.

Better than cheez-its.... at least healthier. It has way more protein than wheat, is high in fiber B vitamins and complex cartbs.

I am currently eating a bowl of farro. Man... this is good.

I just take 2 cups of farro and simmer it in 5 cups of chicken stock that has a bit of worchestshire sauce and red wine vinegar added and cook it for 30 minutes. Add some parmesan cheese afterwards. I totally feel all Spartany afterwards.

You just do not know what you are missing out on.

A serving of quinoa is 1 cup. 1 cup of quinoa has:

222 calories

4g fat - 0g saturated

39g carb - 5g fiber

8g protein

A serving of farro is 1/2 cup, so, doubling that to 1 cup for an equal measurement, its content is:

200 calories

2g fat - 0g saturated

52g carb - 7g fiber

8g protein

So, nutritionally very similar (well, I don't have information on the quality and completeness of the proteins in these grains, so that may lead me to reccomend one over the other depending on that)

I can't speak about Farro, but the big deal with quinoa is that it is a complete protein, and IIRC the only grain that is.

(for people wondering what that means, quinoa contains all 12 essential amino acids)

I guess I'm not surprised that got dumbed down to "has the most protein" over the years.
