CHIEFS RELEASE DE VONNIE HOLLIDAY

Feb 22, 2005, 2:46:55 PM

Kansas City Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Tuesday that the club had released DE Vonnie Holliday.

?Vonnie and his agent knew that in his initial contract with the Chiefs that the large roster bonus coming due this week would probably preclude his continuation with the Kansas City Chiefs,? Peterson said. ?We appreciate Vonnie?s efforts both on and off the field while in Kansas City and wish him success in the future.?

Holliday (6-5, 290) played in nine games (three starts) for Kansas City in 2004, recording 13 tackles (nine solo), four QB pressures and two passes defensed. In two seasons (2003-04) with the Chiefs, he appeared in 25 games (19 starts). He totaled 93 tackles (48 solo), 5.5 sacks (-50.0 yards), 11 QB pressures and five passes defensed. The Camden, South Carolina product joined the Chiefs as a free agent on April 7th of 2003.

The seven-year veteran entered the NFL as a first-round selection (19th overall) of Green Bay in the ?98 NFL Draft. Holliday has appeared in 91 career games (82 starts), registering 353 tackles (220 solo), 37.5 sacks (-236.0 yards), 89 QB pressures, 27 passes defensed, six fumble recoveries, six forced fumbles and two interceptions.

Holliday was a four-year letterman at North Carolina, playing in 46 games. He totaled 162 tackles (83 solo), 11.0 sacks, 28.0 tackles for loss, six forced fumbles and 11 passes defensed. He was a first-team all-state selection at Camden High School in Camden, South Carolina.

Unbelievable! Get rid of one of your best players on defense, what a brilliant strategy.

Here's the Chiefs 2005 schedule:

Home: Denver, Oakland, San Diego, New England, N.Y. Jets, Philadelphia, Washington, Cincinnati

Away: Denver, Oakland, San Diego, Buffalo, Miami, Dallas, N.Y. Giants, Houston.

Mark these games, people. If you need a bye week fill-in, you want the QB, RB, WR, or TE of the teams playing against the Chiefs. If you're in a pinch, look no further!

Vonnie Holliday was not one of the Chiefs best defensive players -- not even close. He was a major dissapointment for the Chiefs and frankly most Chiefs fans are looking forward to seeing more of Jared Allen ...

agreed, didn't get to see many chief games but 19 starts in 2 seasons, 93 tackles, not living up to the hype or the pay to justify otherwise.

Exactly. This is a great move for the Chiefs. Not sure how much cap space this makes available. There will be more moves like this in the weeks to come as the Chiefs try to get some more cap room.

No offense but I've always played my people against KC.

That defense has to improve somehow.

Granted he wasn't the greatest player on the D,

but he wasn't terrible. Even though he was costing them a fortune.

We'll see who they bring in to replace him.

Jared Allen looked pretty impressive as a situational pass rusher last year & led the NFL in sacks for a rookie with 9 and had 31 tackles in his limited role. That's better than Holliday has had since 2001 with Green Bay. I don't see how anyone can say Holliday is their best defensive player. It remains to be seen Allen if he can play every down, but I think he certainly earned the chance and Holliday, due to make a sizable hit on KC's cap, seems to have earned his chance at free agency.

You know, I've been playing fantasy football since 1999. I've been a member of several other fantasy football forums for a few years now, and most are very peaceful, with very little flaming. I joined this forum a month or so ago, and noticed that people around here are much more antagonistic. What gives? Why are some guys such bad persons around here? It's jerks like "Hat Trick" that make me want to leave and never come back here again.

Well, calling Vonnie Holliday one of the best players on that defense was going a little bit overboard don't you think? Holliday was a non factor, and his cap number was way too much to justify his lack of production.

But that doesn't excuse the fact that someone assumed that just because my post count is low that I am some "newbie" who doesn't understand anything about fantasy football. And is there EVER an appropriate time to call someone an idiot? What a jerk.

This isn't the first example. I see a lot of antagonism and hostility around here. People seem to have no other purpose than to jump on every aspect of other's posts.

Now your team gets to face Rany Moss twice a year. Moss could average 200 yards receiving and three touchdowns a game against your guys.

I'd wager post count had little to do with him calling you a newbie. It was the obvious lack of football knowledge calling Holliday their best D player. The fact that you have a low post count is only what kept him from ridiculing you for it.

I've been here for years & still consider myself a newbie in a lot of ways, but I don't get offended when somebody calls me on something. We all have our own opinions & that's part of what makes this site so great. If your opinion differs from someone elses then argue your point. If somebody wants to poke fun at you for it then take it in stride. Listen to smithkt, grow some skin & you'll do just fine here.

Yep. But I didn't take it and I'm the best of friends with Bill Swerski.

Back on subject for just a moment if nobody minds.

I heard a Chiefs "insider" interviewed on the radio this morning and he claims that the Chiefs have the cap room to buy a new defense. With Vermeil and Peterson in their swansong the thought is that they will "go for the gusto" this season.

So we shall see what kind of an instant defense they can put together for one more push for the title.

Not exactly news to anyone, but heads are going to roll.

That's pretty much been my assertion since the season ended. I think it's all or nothing this year. The Chiefs will have some cap money available, and I see a lot of big signing bonuses for some defensive help with cap friendly contracts for this next season.

Then, Peterson leaves and lets someone else clean up the mess.

Well, actually the league cap increases substantially over the next few years if I am not mistaken, so they can do a lot of creative things if need be.

And yes, they will blow this team up after the next season......if they don't win the ......aw hell, who am I kidding.
