theeohiostate
Haven't been out in about 10 years, but went the last few days with the family for a few hours. WHAT A BLAST!!! Aside from the fact i took my wife, our 3,14, and 16 year olds, that have never put on skies before, i had fun. Had to leave them on the beginner slopes after i got the grove back, but hoping they enjoyed it as i'd love to start back up again. It was "blown" snow and very slow, hoping for a nice snowfall here in Ohio sometime, only 2" so far this year The last time i skied was up at Killinton's Vermont, that's a huge difference from the little mound we have access to here. irish
Skiing is truly a great rush!! About 15 years ago I bought all the ski stuff from one of those Princeton Ski Shop blowout sales at the Meadowlands. Sometime that same season, I hit the slopes and had a blast. I took it slow for about half the first day cause I didn't want to break my ass too much. Once I got the hang of things, especially being able to slow down and stop, the turning part was a piece of cake I couldn't get enough. However, on that first day, I watched a friend smash his nose into bits. He kept planting his poles into the ground every time he turned back and forth. I told him it wasn't a good idea and he said it made him feel more comfortable. Finally, he stuck the pole in the ground ran it over and the tip of the pole hit him right in the nose. On the way down from the slope to the medical center I just had to ask, "How comfortable are you now?" I haven't been skiing in years and would love to go more frequently. One of the very painful things I do remember was how much pain my legs, specifically shins, were in after a long day skiing. I'm thinking I had sh1tty boots. I'm a skier. I live 30 minutes from Mt. Bachelor in the Oregon Cascades. Haven't been up for a few weeks because there is no new snow, and it's really icy. Pretty normal snow year but quite dry this month We have about 110 inches on the mountain right now, which now might be a bit below normal and no big storms forecasting theh next 7 days. The top of the mountain here is 9000 ft. and nice long runs. The longest run is 1.5 miles. My only complaint is the resort is on an exposed volcano and it is always windy and powder days you are often skiing in a cloud and with poor visibility and cold. I miss Tahoe skiing with nicer weather, but don't miss the Tahoe lift lines. Glad you had fun in the snow.
H8tank
I tried once, got going 90mph on bunny slope and stopped by face planting and ripping my arm off... Now I stick to tequila and snowmobiles.
irish
I had another buddy of mine do a very similar thing. He was cookin' down a pretty steep slope on a more advanced Blue and he had never gone skiing before and right when it levels out you have to make a real slick hairpin turn. Well as you can imagine he never made the turn shot over a snow embankment and into the chain link fence. He has never gone skiing again and if it weren't for the fence he would've never done anything again.

Is it significantly better than Hood? Next month headed up to Whistler. For those that have not been to Whistler, I highly recommend it. Best skiing I've experienced in North America. I haven't been to Hood but from what people tell me the two don't compare. Bachelor is on the east slope so the snow is as dry as Colorado-what the PR folks say anyway. There are more runs and smaller crowds. But a much longer drive for you. I have heard Whistler is great. I usually want to go to someplace warm in the winter, and I have skiing at my doorstep, so I haven't ventured up there yet. Is Whistler really cold? You can tell I'm getting old. I used to ski until after my 2nd knee surgery when the doctor told me that if I ever skied again, I better not come back to him. That was enough for me. Now that I'm in Portland, I've been snowshoeing on Hood almost every weekend and been up the Hogsback a couple times this winter. I'm enjoying the lack of crowds and no lift wait. Snow conditions seemed pretty good a couple weeks ago. I'm heading up tomorrow but we're looking at some warm weather. No new snow in the forecast for a couple weeks. Whistler is definitely a great place. It was awesome to ski and its still awesome to hang out in town...even in the middle of summer. Jimmy Neutron
I used to ski when I was a kid. I live within 30 miles of many nice resorts. I learned that I like fishing and hunting through the winter months - even at their most expensive, it's cheaper than skiing. No crowds either, which is the real deciding factor for me. I hear you on the cheaper part. We had to buy some snow wear, about $500, then lift tickets and rentals were another $400 for the day for 5 people. I have my old skies, but they are 225's and there is NO WAY i'm wearing them, all i need at this age it some 170's and take it easy. Looking on Ebay last few days, for some deals on getting the family some stuff...................freakin' more expensive then my golfing, as i have to include the entire family

No new snow in the forecast for a couple weeks. Snowshoed in the moonlight last night near Mt. Bachelor. We get this inversion layer a few times a year. So it town it was dense fog and 21 degrees. At Mt. Bachelor, 2500 ft higher it was 28 degrees and clear, and we didn't use headlamps, just navigated by the moon. It was fun. I like snowshoeing here since it seems the trails are either too flat or too steep for cross country skiing, and on snowshoes you can go anywhere with little skill involved. I've mountain biked Hogsback before. It was really weird. Driving on one of the forest service roads from leaving the trails, I saw what looked like to me a wolf running across the road trying to take down a fawn. It was brown and whitish and big-I'd say at least 70 lbs. I contacted the ranger station who dismissed it and thought I was crazy, and said I must have seen a coyote. I tried to tell them it was much bigger and it had more coat and too much white on it to be a coyote. Since no wolves have been reported in the area my only guess is it was a wolf hybrid that used to be a pet.
Seattle LawDawg
Snowshoeing by moonlight sounds awesome. I'd love to try that some time. Our snow on Hood wasn't great yesterday. We had a pretty crusty layer on top, especially once we got off-trail and back into the woods a bit. I wanted to give my new handheld GPS a test by getting into a pretty dense tree canopy...the thing was amazing...never had less than 7 sats locked on so that was cool....the snowshoeing part wasn't as much fun. Gameday
There is a small ski club one mile from our house that costs $250 for the whole family to join each year. There are 6 downhill runs, 4 ski jumps (5M, 15M, 30M, and 60M), and 5 miles of cross country trail. We have tow ropes instead of ski lifts, but they work fine. I have my two boys (ages 8 and 4) entered in downhill lessons and the older boy is on the ski jumping team. I think there are about 300 kiddos entered in the downhill lessons. It's an absolute hoot to see those little goobers making their way down the training slopes every weekend. Every Tue and Thur I take the older boy to ski jump training. It's absolutely amazing to see those kids blasting down those high jumps and sailing through the air, sometimes going a few hundred feet. The US record is about 300M. The coach is a 2-time Olympian and one of our kids is the reigning national champ. Who would ever expect to see this kind of facility in Madison, WI? Anyhow, I'm not a skiier but I took it up just so I could spend time with the boys. Two weeks ago I went down a steep run with my older boy and at the bottom he said "Dad, I heard you screaming like a little 2-year old girl the whole time." I also tried cross country skiing last weekend. I damn near froze to death, but it was a blast.

They had 11" before we got there, and it was a good thing. They really needed it. The sunshined and it was 30 or above each day. Not one flake of snow. It all hit the mountains and dumped on you guys in Denver. Between the crowds and the warm weather by the weekend most everything was icy. We got pretty frustrated on the last day and quit early. We were waiting in line for 20 minutes each lift. We skied the whole mountain looking for shorter lines, and so had everyone else. Everyone was spread around. We are looking at going in January or early February next year. My MIL teaches and I think she is retiring after this year, so we can go anytime next year. I would like to go to Breck for the reason you mention. You can go to other places if you are willing to drive a little.
Bier Meister
from where i lived..... breck 5 min keystone 10-15 min arapahoe basin 15-20 min copper mountain 15 min vail 30 min beaver creek 40 min breck just put in a new gondola...can reach peaks 7 and 8 from the lower lots now.... and there was the new lift put in last year which gets you to the highest peak in north america. good and bad. easier access to good spots... but now more crowded. still a very good mountain. i think the best time to come is the week after new years..... usually good snow and there is a dip in tourism because people are recovering from x-mas spending.
