Randall
What do you think about T Davis? Do you agree that they'll turn him into a WLB?
Swampnuts
I think a lot of it's going to depend on what happens this offseason. They have to re-sign Witherspoon, and if they do he'll play the weak side. They have the combo of Draft and Short on the strong side, so my guess is Davis stays in the secondary. I found a good article on their website about it. http://www.panthers.com/news/newsroomNewsDetail.jsp?id=23639
PantherDave
The priority is to resign Spoon, as TDavis has flourished and should get better in the Rover position, which is a hybrid type DB/LB. The Panthers ran a interesting nickel last year with TD, at times he would play DB, LB or even DE type. The fact that McCree played so well, and is now the starter at SS while Minter plays the FS. TD was drafted to mainly to control and spy on Vick, and he gave Vick fits in the two games. I don't see Fox changing it up next year, as he was apparently very happy with the secondary of Minter, McCree, Lucas and Gamble. So, in essence, TD is the nickel back now, as he pretty much benched Manning. I look for TD to be the nickelback and play the rover as well again next year. Drafted him iate in the Bastages league to see what happens with Witherspoon. I have heard some say they thought Spoon would leave and TD may take his place even though he would need to improve to do so.
PantherDave
Yes, I know you got TD-good call, but I drafted Spoon, who I feel is the Panthers best LB.

Today Sarge drafted TD and Keg talked about them wanting him as a WLB. Wondered what you thought about it.
PantherDave
Well if Spoon chooses to take alittle more money and leave, then yes, I think he will have a chance to win the job in TC, but Ciurrci(sp) is in the mix as well. In fact, if they don't resign Spoon it very well may be an open competiton, but Vinny C has the inside track to start at the WLB spot. This group jelled big time, and is now considered one of the best secondaries in the league, so I doubt this chemistry will be touched-Fox aint stupid, and McCree is veiwed as the starter, and most likely will not lose his spot to Branch. I for one, would be very surprised to see Fox not go with McCree as the starter. Edited February 20, 2006 by PantherDave
PantherDave
Plus, can you honestly say as a Panther Homer that you would not rather have McCree start? This is the most cohesive unit Fox has had yet in Carolina without a doubt, and I just don't see this chemistry being fugged with, it, in my opinion, would be a step backwards. PSULions
Actually, I am not a football coach or have I ever played, but I think that Fox loves speed and Branch has more speed than McCree (BTW it is not McGree). McCree did great in run support and had a much better season than I expected, but just because he had a good season, I am not completely sold on him as our starter. He started out great, but tailed off toward the end of the season. He was on two different teams (Jax, Hou) previously to the one year contract that brought him to the Panthers last March, so I was a great fill in this season, but I think the jury is still out on him. He will be a FA in March if the Panthers can't resign him. I know that Fox likes him and we would like to have him back, but I believe that Branch will be the starter in September and McCree will be a role player and provide needed depth in the secondary. If he demands too much money, he will test the market and possibly move on to his 4 team in six seasons. I guess that I must disagree with you on the comparison of Branch vs. McCree, as I think Branch has a brighter future than McCree. I do hope that we keep him for a reasonable price, but I think Spoon is the first guy we take care of and I hope we go after Edge and draft so McCree will not get his offer until we can address higher priorities before getting to him. JMHO. Edited February 18, 2006 by PSULions
PantherDave
We will know in 7 months, but the Branch I remember got burned alot, and was not the tackler or hitter McCree is, also, it takes about two years to be 100% back from knee surgery(know from experience). We shall see, as Branch was the starter, and Fox is somewhat the "you don't lose your spot due to injury" kind of coach ala SD. I just really liked this past years group chemistry, and if Branch is truly an upgrade, then by all means plug him back into the starting line-up. However, this may evolve into a TC competition where CB has to earn his job back, and if that's the case-let the better player win-Peace PD. darin3
Didn't read all the responses so this may have been noted, but I've heard several experts say Davis lacks the overall foot speed to play in the secondary in the NFL.

PantherDave
Hopefully to explain my interest in OSU's Draft thread about TD and the Panthers WLB-just wanted to make sure everyone knew he would be a DB next year(most likely). Peace PD.

Randall
1333489[/snapback] Sarge, I respect your comments on IDP. This year is my first in a keeper or IDP league and have been folllowing your draft trying to improve. I'm Big Dogs in the Bastages league. I am lacking in LB's but will get better as the season approaches(hopefully). Perhaps I can get someone in the rookie draft. We have 5 rounds. If T Davis becomes a LB that would help too.
