hooknladder
I don't like this at all. Should'nt ALL the balls be the same? This seems to invite "doctoring" the balls.
Chief Dick
I have no problem with bringing your own balls to the fight.
LooGie
But seriously, new equipment sucks. Broken-in equipment is much nicer. If a ball slips out of a quarterback's hand, I want it to be because the quarterback messed up, not because of a slick, new ball. As long as all the teams get to doctor their balls equally, I see no problem in it. Baseball players have their own gloves and bats and can do most anything to them barring corking and pine taring. yah, but in baseball, you're only hitting the ball, and catching it in a big leather mitt. A football is being thrown TO BE caught either barehanded, or with some thin gloves. it could be very easy to doctor them up I'm ok with doctoring them, but I think it should be a league regulated thing, where the balls are shipped to the teams after the doctoring has been completed. It seems like it would be very easy to doctor a football to make it harder to fumble, or easier to catch, or anything in between. Why the hell can't they just make a football (and a baseball for that matter) that comes off the line..you know..READY. Easy to grip, catch and throw? Why make them slick in the first place. BillyBalata
Doctor them up? Are you guys freakin' serious? Like how? They surely aren't going to gouge them up like in baseball to make them curve more. Is there a way to make them fly straighter? Faster? I know, put handles on them, so they're easier to catch! You guys do realize they're filled with air, and theirs only so much "doctoring" you can do before you pop them. This change was brought about in the off-season by a bunch of the QBs getting together, led by Manning and Brady, and petitioning the league to let each team get a hold of 10 of the brand new balls they use for each game, and "rough" them up a little so they aren't all new, shiney and slippery. Some QBs liked them a little slippery, some liked them less slippery. Nothing going on here. Move along.
STL Fan
All balls must be submitted to the referee crew several hours before game time where they check for pressure, size and appropriate finish. This is just allowing teams to fix them the way their QB likes them, but they still must meet NFL specs. Some like them slick and hard, others prefer a little more grip. Until now, the home team prepared all the balls and if they know how the other QB likes them, they go the other way. This is MUCH fairer. Todd1
I read this article on the Milwaukee JS website too, about how the GB crew prepare's Favre's game balls. The irony is that a few years ago, they banned the kickers and punters from doing the same thing!! K's and P's used to bake balls in the oven to soften them up. That ban had an effect on the punting and kicking accuracy for a while, some would say that may be the reason there are fewer coffin corner kicks in the NFL. Where is the justice for special teams???
