cliaz
http://undercover.com.au/News-Story.aspx?id=1619 Van Halen Challenge Spinal Tap As Most Ridiculous Band Ever by Paul Cashmere - February 21 2007 photo by Kevin Mazur Van Halen's announced comeback with original singer David Lee Roth has been shelved before it has even happened. The new line-up of Van Halen was to include Eddie Van Halen's son Wolfgang who now officially beats Gary Cherone as the least time in the band. Wolfie replaced original bass player Michael Anthony who was either fired or left on his own accord, depending on who you speak with. The reunion with Roth got off to a shaky start when Eddie's girlfriend (and former porn star) Janie Liseweski put out a press release announcing the reunion before it had been run by David Lee Roth. While Spinal tap may have originally been based on Black Sabbath, Van Halen is sure to inspire a sequel. Roth left the band in 1985 and was replaced by Sammy Hagar. Hagar found out he was dumped in 1998 when he read about it in the press. Former Extreme singer Gary Cherone came in for a third version of the band but didn't survive past one album. Hagar returned for a tour in 2004, but left citing issues with Eddie Van Halen for his second departure. After Anthony was dumped for no apparent reason, he went out on tour last year with Hagar performing a complete Van Halen setlist. Hagar and Roth did a similar thing a few years earlier, touring as Sam and Dave and performing for the first time, the complete Van Halen catalogue with original voices … minus Van Halen. Warner Music is due to release a new Best of Van Halen featuring the Roth years later this year. It is uncertain if the album will ever be released. Pope Flick
I'll tell what I know, but not much is recent. A buddy of mine worked very high up on the DLR side of the Hagar/DLR tour from a few years back. Michael Anthony played bass on both sets I believe (at least Hagar's set) and was clearly a VH mole to gauge who the band would go out with again after that tour. DLR was still psycho, so after it fell apart (due to a backstage fight between a DLR employee -higher than my buddy- and Hagar that involved (apparently) a flipped dinner table Hagar and his parents were eating at). Leading up to that tour, Eddie was REALLY sick, and hiding from Valerie Bertinelli by jamming in a bathroom of his palatial estate where he could smoke cigarettes without her knowledge. As far as why the Hagar/VH tour fell apart, there's no telling. But Eddie has been close to death because of his health, and it's a shame he won't get at least one more go around. Obviously, he's healthy enough to think he can tour, but that fact that it blew up so quickly isn't a surprise here either.

TimC
It would have been a surprise if they actually pulled it off. And more surprising if they sounded halfway decent doing it. And I'm a hugh fan.

jaxfactor
I've seen all there is to see. I saw VH 3 times in their prime(1st 3 albums) and Hagar a couple times solo so it's no big loss to me. Kinda wish I would have seen VH with Hagar once but I never did. VH lost their appeal to me when they started doing the synthesiser thing with the ghey covers like"Dancin' In The Streets". Dutch Oven
They should have a Behind the Music on these d-bags. It would be unintentionally hilarious.
Bill Swerski
Sounds like Eddies a dick. Eddie's a raging alcoholic. He cleaned up in the mid '90s and fell off the wagon again. The songs he's written recently have been mediocre at best. It's sad, as he's the best technical guitarist of his generation... and not to mention a pretty freaking good songwriter. I saw the reunion tour with Hagar in '04. They sounded a bit rusty, but it was a pretty decent show. Sammy's solo set was good. Eddie's solo set was mesmerizing. I figured that it'd be my last chance to see them live and, unfortunately, it looks like I was right. According to Sammy, Eddie's alcohol problems got way out of control and that was it for him (and probably Anthony as well). Too bad.

VH lost their appeal to me when they started doing the synthesiser thing with the ghey covers like"Dancin' In The Streets". Fortunately, that synthesizer crap only lasted for three albums and they came back with (the really bad word) in the early '90s. Balance wasn't that bad, either. Sammy's very good live, even in his advanced age. He's a much better singer than Roth ever was.

bushwacked
Van Halen put out more good music on their first album than the ENTIRE grunge fad combined. If you consider a mix of Yngwie Malmsteen and Weird Al Yankovic good music, you are most definitely correct.

If you take Pearl Jam out of the equation, I'd agree with that statement. If you're into intelligent, poetic lyrics, Van Halen isn't the band for you. But they rocked like none other in their heydey. cliaz
Much ado about nothing. One of the most overrated bands ever. agree 100%. There really isn't one song they put out that is more of a classic then the average RUSH song. I thought VH was just blah at best. Van Halen put out more good music on their first album than the ENTIRE grunge fad combined. The whole 1st perl jam CD had more songs that are more popular then VHs first CD. Hands down. Now if we are talking Cinderella that's a different story...
bushwacked
But they rocked like none other in their heydey. IMO, here is one of many old school bands that rocked a whole lot more than Van Halen.
