T_bone65
As many of you know, I have a 2 year old daughter that we had a tough time with pre-birth. She just turned 2 a few weeks ago and has a history of ear infections, she has had 2 in the last 3 weeks alone. Most of the antibiotics prescribed for her have bad side effects causing dia amongst other things. Her pediatrician recommended we take her to a ENT for a little looksee and they suggest we have her adenoids removed and also put in ear plugs. I had ear plugs when I was a kid back in the early 70's and never really had anymore ear infections after that, I had some hearing loss but that runs in my family. I have a few friends that have had their kids go through this when their kids were around 4 and they both said no big deal. I was just wondering if anyone here has any knowledge on this as far as speech problems or hearing loss goes. Any help would be greatly appreciated and may put my wifes mind more at ease, she is terrified right now (biut whatelse is new ). TIA
tonorator
don't you mean ear tubes vs. plugs? i've never heard of plugs .... our youngest son had his tonsils/adenoids removed as well as tubes in the ears. his problem was that his passageways would close up quickly whenever he got sick, so these steps were taken to open them up a bit. i believe the steps worked as we did not have any more serious episodes (we had a scary emergency room visit prior to this). i believe this is fairly routine. the only freaky part was that they did put him under, which is hard to watch as a parent. all of this happened when he was about 2-3. he's 8 now and all is well. Grits and Shins
My son always had difficulty sleeping through the night and when he did sleep he would snore big time ... he also had a constant runny nose. When he was about 5 we had his adnoids and tonsils removed ... BIG DIFFERENCE.
Big John
I had severe ear infections as a young child. Of course POS father allowed nothing to be done about it. I apparently almost died in one real bad instance where only my mothher's prayers helped. With those, I was apparently totally deaf for 6 months aroung the age of 2. I still have speech problems and some hearing loss (but this may be inherited from mom).
Beaumont
My son had his adnoids out and ear tubes. He had constant ear infections before and they mostly went away ... A good experience for us ... he was scared, but it was well worth it ...
The Irish Doggy
I've only heard good things about those procedures. Best Friend's kid got the ear tubes around 2 and both his speech and health rapidly improved. I don't have my adenoids or tonsils after two separate procedures, and each time my health improved. I still have bad allergies, but at least I'm not the runny nose / chronic sinusitis kid I used to be.
McNasty
I don't know much about after, but I have helped with the procedure, and it really is simple. Takes all of about 20-30 minutes, and is pretty non-invasive. People have great results with the tubes clearing up chronic ear infections and stuff like glue ear. When little ones are that young, their Eustachean tubes aren't straight, so they can't drain well enough... that's what causes all the infections. Eventually the tubes work their own way out as the kid grows. The worst I have heard is that, sometimes, there is bleeding after the adenoids come out, and the recovery is kind of miserable for the kids, especially at that age. Have a lot of Pedia-Lyte popsicles, and cold, soothing stuff available for the couple of days after. Good luck.
whomper
My oldest had chronic ear infections..Her pediatrician suggested seeing a specialist since she had 15 in one. year. She was exaclty 2 at the time. The specialist said to wait 3-5 more months because when a child turns 2 they hit a growth spurt that affects the ear canal and it makes it go more vertical as opposed to hoirzontal and helps the draining process considerably. We took his advice and the ear infections almost all but went away with the expection of a normal amount of random ones. If her hearing isnt threatened in any way and the doc feels the antibiotics use wont hurt her for another 3-4 months or so maybe wait it out a little. Dutch Oven
I haven't been through this with mine, but both my brother's kids did. They were in and out of the hospital in the same day and were much heathier afterwards.
BiggieFries
My wife had this procedure done when she was little and 25 years later... BAM! I now can't have sex with other woman. Seems like lose-lose to me! Seriously though, she did have it done and all her ear infections went away. And that was around 25 years ago. So I'm pretty sure they've improved on the procedure. Good luck with the little one! I'm not looking forward to the day(s) when my son starts getting sick.
