Cars are a necessity, smoking is not. Not even close.

Try not to confuse me for some hippie liberal tree hugging PETA moran. I'm not. Can someone just answer me one question. Why do smokers have the right to harm the public in public places? Why?

Cars are NOT a necessity. You can move to a house within walking or biking distance from where you work. Don't try to lay that jack down. Cars polute 1000 times more than tobacco does but I don't see you making a stink about that. I guess it's only because you don't smoke. It's clear the only causes you support are those that don't immediately impact your cushy little life.

FWIW, I don't smoke but I do believe in individual responsibility. Don't try a make believe that some guy puffing a cig 1000 miles away from you is causing you cancer. That's the Superfund site, the Chevy Tahoe and the Coal fired electricity generating plant down the road from you doing that.

They came first for the Communists,

and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.

Then they came for the Jews,

and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for the trade unionists,

and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Ruby Tuesdays,

and I didn't speak up because I was at Red Lobster.

Then they came for me,

and by that time no one was left to speak up.

Unfortunately I can't afford a house within 15 miles of where I work. I'd like to be able to ride a bycicle to work to offset sitting behind a desk all day. Since my enlistment my health has gone down hill.

Cars are a major polluter and deserve their own topic but I just can't draw the comparison between them and smoking. Honestly I could careless about where people smoke as long as it's not around my children.

I got no problem with that. Don't bring your children to establishments that allow smoking and everyone will be happy.

Smoking bans are mainly put in place for the protection of the workers, not the patrons. I've seen a lot of research for NY that says smoking bans have actually increased business and more people are choosing to eat out.

I actually don't have as much of a problem banning smoking in true restaurants. Bars, on the other hand...

Public demand will make sure my children have plenty of public places to enjoy food and entertainment I'm sure. But I won't shed a tear if the guberment helps alittle. Now if they try and take my guns away from me... :D

Ahh, but therin lies the rub. Here in the wonderful Commonwealth of Virginia, there are no bars. 60% of an establishment's monthly receipts must come from food in order for said establishment to maintain its liquor license.

Couldn't you just move to a real state? :D

:D There are precious few certainties in this world. One is that you will always find a totally freaking random and entirely hilarious association with whatever the topic at hand.

'Cept when you're talking chight about my business. Then you're just a d!ck. :D

Dude, try NC. I know I've mentioned this before, but I could be fined if I server someone a drink when the kitchens closed. Say you walk in 15 minutes before we're open. "Care to wait at the bar and have a drink until we're ready?'...Busted. "One more drink at the end of the meal?" Is the kitchen closed? Busted.

This, of course is to make sure that I'm not just pretending to be a restaurant but really am a bar. Mind you, I figured the 5 line cooks, 2 dishwashers, $70K in kitchen equipment and walk-in full of food might be enough to prove that I'm actually there to sell food. Oh, that and if you check my books, my sales are 75% food.

I so totally hate these laws. Let the friggen marketplace decide. If you want to allow smoking in your establishment, great. In not, that's great too. The appropriate clientel will visit that establishment. F'ing do gooders and their god damned laws.

+1. And I am sick and tired of everybody talking about how they're doing it "for the kids." That's the biggest horsechit claim of all. They did this years ago in Cali, and it's really not that big of a deal, but the idea of these overzealous busybodies just rankles me.
