So a couple of wks ago I donated some prom dresses and jewelry for local HS girls less fortunates. These girls live in homeless shelters or foster homes come from broken homes...a real life Precious movie, one of the girls was raped by her mom's BF but kicked out of the house because the mom blamed her. She had scars and burn marks all over her body, but was surprisingly upbeat about her future. She also has a saving grace, one of her HS teachers watches over her and has vowed to continue being in her life as a Mom/teacher/friend. Kudos to people like this. It really is heart-breaking to hear, but this one teacher has really gone the extra mile to help. Very much a sliver lining

Some people really have an f'd up way to go in this world. Years ago I used to drive a van for the Salvation Army and I would pick up homeless people and take them to area shelters. Sometimes it was 2AM and I was picking up crack addict moms and their small children. As the children would climb into the van I would think to myself what are the odds that this child is going to amount to anything in this world. Talk about having the deck stacked against you from the start.

Thank god for teachers like the one you wrote about here.

And people here will say those kids are poor because they want to be.

I had a high school teacher that made it her mission to keep me out of trouble. She was my health teacher from 9th grade (Mrs. James) and she full well knew the people I hung around were no good. She would drop by my house after school sometimes to make sure I was home doing school work or just to talk to my parents about what was going on around school with me. It used to tick me off. In 10th grade I had to take a semester of nutrition and guess who was my teacher? So in 11th grade I became her student assistant, again in 12th grade, and came back the following three years after high school just to talk to her.

To this day, she is one of the main reason I'm not with those other guys in jail, or welfare, strung out, etc.

My wife does things with the local girls shelter several times a year. For Christmas she bought about 20 blankets and monogrammed the girls names on them. I is amazing how grateful the girls were for the simple and relatively cheap gifts.
